Final farewell from CTP.
« on: December 30, 2010, 10:01:26 pm »

Christopher is letting the rpgmodding.com site die on 1/23/2011, and I can not afford to purchase what is necessary to keep it going.

It also seems that all the team members have left without even saying goodbye.

This is sad news indeed.  There is a huge amount of custom content
tips/ticks/tutorials here on the site, and a huge amount of time and
effort has been spent by me and other team members over the years.  I hate to see this lost to the community, but there is not much I can do about it now.

To all the fans and supporters I would like to express a profound thank
you.  You kept interest through all the troubles that CTP has endured
over the years, but I guess there is really not much reason to attempt
to keep this site going anymore.

Traffic is way down, and only the die-hards (like me) keep visiting.

I no longer have the energy or desire to keep plugging at such a huge
project by myself.  I know, I have said that in the past, and other
folks convinced me to continue regardless of the various issues.  This
time though, there are no friends left to help share in the work.

Take care all, and enjoy the content as best you can.  There will be a change in the licensing posted for the content on the vault, with the exception of Babylon, and CTP_Generic doors, I am releasing all rules from use/abuse of the content.  Babylon and the CTP_Generic doors are not mine to release from those licensing/re-use restrictions.

Goodbye, and thanks for all the fish.

JP, aka Bannor.

Sad to see you go. Hopefully you'll find something else to engage your talents down the road, in NWN or othewise. '<img'>

Take care Bannor, its been one hell of as ride for the CTP Team and NWN. Good luck with whatever endeavors come your way.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank-you and the other members of the CTP Team that gave me the guidance and inspiration to embark upon CC creation. You guys will always hold a special place in my memories.

The CTP made some amazing contributions to the custom content community. Thanks for all your hard work.

I'm hoping this doesn't mean that you are going to disappear from NWN, Bannor. Your knowledge is extensive, and extremely valuable. It always feels strange when something we've been a part of changes (or even does end), and you have been part of CTP and RPGModding for a long while. I hope a way to save the information at that site is found, and moreso I hope you continue to mod, continue to post, and continue to have fun. Perhaps it is now time for Bannor to pick up a new tool? We can always use more animations! '<img'>

Whatever  you do, I hope you find as much enjoyment and reward as you've obviously found with NWN.

Good luck,

JFK

Bannor, I don't remember if you were part of the CTP back in '04 when I was.  But as a former CTP member I'd just like to say goodbye and thank you.'<img'>

Thank you for the kind words folks, it helps a bit.  As to future plans... I was sort of blindsided by this today, so I haven't had time to stop and think about it much.

Jackal_GB, I was a member back when CTP was just a guild on Bioware.  A sort of silent member wishing encouragement to the team that existed back then.  When CTP opened it's own website, I joined up the first week, and never really looked back.

When I started with CTP, all I could accomplish was bug reports.  I did that very well though, it is something that is ingrained in my nature.  I am a QA type guy.  I learned to 'fix' things, slowly, very slowly at first but my momentum grew as my skills improved.

It has been a VERY wild ride, up to and including doing work with Wyvern Crown of Cormyr , the last Premium that I helped to releas as a DLA member.

I think the most fun, no, I KNOW the most fun was working on Babylon, CTP had a great team then, and a huge amount of really custom work went into that set and I sorely SORELY miss the folks that helped with that effort.

However, it seems that Bioware really did put a final nail in the coffin for NWN when they moved the forums here, and we lost a huge community of folks that just couldn't be bothered with having to learn a new forum, and lost all the history etc...

I don't think there will ever be another developer that will give a community the tools that Bioware did with NWN.  The toolset, the way content was added to a mod, the fairly simple yet VERY powerful ability to create tilesets, and custom content has been lost to new engines that just require too much in additional software licenses to allow most folks to get involved.  The skills required alone are mind boggling, but when you add the multiple thousands that are required to license all the different software, it just becomes next to impossible for folks to even get interested, much less accomplish anything.

I am hoping that we can save a bit of the tutorial section from the rpgmodding site, but I have no idea how long I really have to accomplish anything.

Bannor, I've offered it in the past to other teams, and I'll offer it to you as well.  I'll host the CTP forums on my site, either as a separate entity or molded into my existing website structure.  Have Christopher contact me if its something you're interested in.  I would hate to see all the valuable information stored in those forums disappear.

If you choose to continue modding in NWN, pick something you're passionate about and release it as your own.  You definitely should not continue doing something you no longer have the desire to do.  Some things just need to be let go.  As much as I hate to say it, because it has been so good to the community, CTP is one of those things.

Hoping you the best in whatever gaming endeavour you choose to follow.

wow, I hope you at least stick around with the rest of us and work on some private projects. A little bit here a little bit there adds up. There are still a few of us adding things on our own schedule. I know it great to do big projects, but also stressful. Good luck on whatever you decide and hope you pop in now and again even if it just to check in on everyone.

Well Bannor, all I can do is apologise yet again for not being around as much as I should be.  Working on a doctorate, I tend to find smaller projects that I can finish quickly appealing as distractions from my thesis in the little bit of spare time that I have, compared with all the work I know we still have to do at the CTP.  On the one hand, I reckon putting the CTP on hiatus is better than shutting it down.  On the other hand, it's been on informal hiatus for quite some time now.  But at least on hiatus the work can be picked up by anyone who feels like it when they have the time, no?  And the site could always be hosted elsewhere, as quite a few people have offered to put it up.

Anyway: as you know, I loved working with you on Babylon.  Even if that set really had us worn down by the very end, we were worn down together.  I keep you and your dearest in my daily prayers and still count you as a friend, even if I haven't always acted like one.  Sorry for letting you down.

Sorry to hear about this but I definitely understand. Managing time for modding has become very difficult for a lot of us over the last couple of years. I hope that you're able to take up Michael's offer, or at least get a full backup of the site data before it's shut down so that it can be launched again in the future if circumstances warrant. Best of luck and best wishes!

Bannor c'mon now... I as a custom content creator have come, gone and back again, no need to bid everyone farewell unless you only mean farewell for the CTP.

There's very little reason to leave a community saying farewell as though you'll never come back, cause you know you will '<img'>

Anyhow, it's too bad for the CTP.
I never quite understood why anyone who host a website for a free community would spent money
on "Forum" and or "CMS" software when there is quite a few out there that are free and awesome or AS awesome or MORE awesome then vB. The hosting expense I can understand though as not
everyone are equipped to host from a server in their basement or that their ISP permits it.

Final farewell from CTP.

Oh, I am not leaving the scene entirely, so it is only CTP that is now almost gone.  I am attempting (with others) to save the tutorial sections, but otherwise that site will get lost.  Since a huge part of it was for specific member groups etc, the wayback machine will not even save it.

Anyway, life goes on.  Still not sure what my future holds here.  Seems that CTP is no longer needed/wanted by the community, and if it is, then it seems that no-one really wants to do the work involved.  While great ideas come out in posts, few, if any, real solutions seem to appear.  When they do, the original author's name is forgotten and the work is just taken and abused.  Oh well,. been down that road here before, not going to retread those steps again.
