Help, I Can't export a model
« on: November 13, 2010, 07:03:54 am »

Alright, I'm totally new to NWN modeling but I'm trying to learn it.  Here's what I am using...

- NWN Explorer
- GMax v1.2
-NWmax v0.8 b61

Alright, I can get a model imported just fine.  I am testing with a table placeable model, specifically PX2_A06.

I import it and when I select the model's square base thing like the tutorial said to do, and go to the Rainbow tab and under the "Model Base Parameters" I export it there, it NEVER makes a file where it said it will.  I never get an error pop-up or anything.

The tutorial had me modify the model file and try to export it, that never worked.  So I am just trying to export anything at all, just an unmodified model file exporting successfully would be helpful but it doesn't work.

Not a lot of people use GMax, maybe that's the problem, that it's now broke and no one has fixed it yet?  Or maybe it's just my computer, please help, I followed the tutorial several times over and it never works.

Gmax isn't broken at all. I guess you're using Vista or Windoze 7. There are no error messages if gmax can't export a file to a directory where it doesn't have write access. The handling of read and write access with Vista is totally fubar '<img'>
Start NWMax in admin mode or try exporting to the desktop because that's about the only place you can be sure to have write access to '<img'> if that doesn't work, there's something wrong with your gmax. Also make sure the 'listener' is started. It appears as a small black icon at the right side of the start bar named NWMax Snoop.

Nothing to do with which version of windows you have. GMax (NWMax) always exports to the meshes directory in gmax by default. Check that folder and you'll find your files.

Under the many menu options of NWMax, choose the top one, scroll down, and there is a folder select option.  Set that where you want the file to export.  You MUST do this every time you open GMax, as NWMax does NOT save that option.  By default, it will just export to the the meshes directory as Pstemarie stated. (I know, that 'reset' makes you think it goes back to default, but it doesn't, it actually affects the mdl that is currently loaded instead, basically, a bad choice for the name of that button... it should be something like 'force location' or 'set location'.)

Sometimes, you have to select the mdl base, and go back to that folder location option and hit the 'reset' button to force it to work in correct location.  This is a rare thing though, generally, just re-setting the correct folder each time you start GMax it will work.

So, best way?  Select mdl base, go to the export folder selection option on top menu of nwmax, scroll down to the folder selection, adjust the location using browse, then hit the 'reset' button. Now you can export.

               I'm using Windows XP.

Zwerkules, you're right, there is no NWNMax Snoop running.  The NWNMax window shows when I start GMax, but the snoop icon that the tutorial said I needed isn't there.  It doesn't tell me how to get it there either, heh.  Searching online isn't much help either since there is literally no information on this stuff.

I just got it.  Apparently, I can't just open GMax, I have to use the NWMax start thingy.  This should fix the problem, thanks everyone!

It's all these little details that have kept me from trying my hand at modeling, but now I think I can finally give it a go.
