November's 2010 Custom Content Challenge: Ancient Civilizations

I'm still working on the roman city tileset, but it won't have a lot of groups and features by the end of November.

The buildings terrain and the town wall crossers will be fully usable by the end of the month and by then I'll also have added the missing doors and gates.

Maybe I'll also be able to finish two groups: the temple of the vestal virgins and the pantheon.

You know, I cant help but wonder if you might be better using a less bright colour for the buildings. Much as it's nice to have brighter colours in there, I'm not sure they really fit when the rest of the set is so dark and greyed out.

Looking really great apart from that, though.

I'm gonna take the opposite tack from Six and say that, while I agree that the yellow sticks out, instead of dimming said yellow, why not lighten the rest?

The grey stone in the walls could become white marble, instead, and the street, rather than being grass, could be baked clay or stone pavers/cobbles.  No self-respective Roman walked on an unpaved street!

               *likes Eradrian's idea even better*

More work, but with likely a stronger net result.

I agree with a lighter color tone.

But also I think the greenish stones of remparts, is at odd with the greyish stones of building walls. I'd do either one or the other, The greenish stones suppose moss, hence rain, while the greyish suggest dry cilmate, as well as yellow walls suggest a hot climate. I would just desaturate the greenish stones and lighten them up  little to match the buildings.

Still a nice and innovative tileset Zwerkules =)

The dirt texture is just a placeholder anyway, it will be a cobble texture later. I can make the townwalls lighter, a kind of dark beige maybe, but I will not use a marble texture for them. I don't want there to be too much marble and there'll be a lot more marble used once I get to the temples and smaller buildings.

I made a cobble texture for the ground and changed the texture of the town walls.

I get very strange shadows from the PC (and probably from NPC, haven't added any yet).  If the PC is up on a townwall or another high place I get three shadows. One on the 'floor' of the wall, one on its side and one on the ground.

               Thank you, Lass!
Maybe you'll like the city gate as well.

'Image

It is so big that I couldn't make a screenshot of the whole gate, but I think you get a pretty good impression of what it looks like from the screenshot. It is almost finished, but not quite. There's a texture smear on the floors of the towers which is easy enough to fix, but the animation of the gates got broken and I have to figure out how to fix them. They open fine inward, but start to rotate wildly when opened outward ':?'.

I think this looks fantastic, Zwerkules.  You're doing a great job, really well done!  Will you stop working on it in a couple of days when November ends?

Eradrain, I will not stop working on it, but I will only work on it occasionally, because I'll concentrate on finishing the medieval city from next month on.

Next feature is either the temple of the vestal virgins (a round one) or the roman pantheon.
