Any Chance Of A Flying Prismatic Dragon At All?
« on: October 30, 2010, 08:04:40 am »

Excuse me? Anyone out there? I have a question to ask please?

There are tons of dragons in the CEP of every shape, size and colour. My favourtes are the ones with wings that can fly through the air.  There are a lot of these in different colours. But as my title suggests, I would like to see a flying prismatic dragon. Why haven't I seen one in the CEP yet? ''
I think it would be   rather ineresting, as I have some kind of an idea in my head which would involve 1 in a fight with another, and 1 or 2 of the smaller ones not far behind somewhere. (it's only a very rough idea right now though)

I know I'm probaably the only person to ask about this. But I guess it would have to be a unanimous vote by a lot of people, for an agreement to be made about doing this, right? I can bet there will be people who think it's not a good idea. If not.... could they tell me why please?

But also..... is there anyone out there who think it might be a nice idea too please?
I guess I woud just like to know what peoples thoughts are on this?

I hasten to add..... that I am in NO WAY.... any type of modelller whatsoever!
I don't have a single clue about the first thing in creating creatures or placeables.... nor anything of the type whatsoever in NwN! So I guess I would have to try and contact whoever made the dragons in the CEP (if I knew who they were) and ask them if they would make the flying prismtic dragon in a future update perhaps.

For now, as I said.... I'd just like to know what peoples thoughts are on this pease?

If no one's responded to your post, chances are the answer to "Does this exist?" is No.

If your question is actually "Will you make this for me?" then chances are, the answer will also be No.  While some modelers do occasionally do community requests if it's an idea they like and might actually also use themselves, for the most part random requests will be ignored.  The reason for this is simple:  Imagine if you were a painter, and someone walked up to you and said, "Hey, I can't paint worth a damn, but I want you to paint something for me.  No, I won't pay you, and before you try and offer to show me how to do it myself, I'm going to flat out say that I have no idea how to paint and no desire to learn, but here's what I want you to do."  Even something as simple as the reskin you want done here would take somebody hours of their life to accomplish.  Yes, we're amateurs here, not professionals, and I doubt many of us would accept payment even if it was offered, so that painting analogy doesn't go all the way.  But I think I can speak for most of the custom content community in saying that we like being treated with respect, and not merely as a resource people think they have the right to use.  That sense of entitlement has led some of our best custom content authors to leave the community over the years, which is a shame, and the game is worse off for it.  I'm not saying your post was intentionally disrespectful, mind you, only that this sort of random, open request thread is more common than I'd like and assumes that we're here to make things for people other than ourselves, when in reality most of us just make what we like and then decide to share it after the fact.

If your question is actually just, as you wrote, "What are peoples' thoughts on this?"  Well, for my part at least, I never bothered to use any of the flying dragon models from the CEP.  I think they're a bit low quality for 2010's standards, though they were definitely better when they were first made (around 2004, I think?).  Plus they use the flying animations of the Raven familiar, and I think that just isn't what a flying dragon ought to look like.  Dragons don't flap, imo.

NOW!  If your question, hidden beneath everything else, is "How do I make this myself?" Then I'd be happy to help you.

Basically you need to find the resources for the model you want.  Download NWN Explorer and use it to search through the CEP files.  Then extract the model and texture, and recolor the texture in Photoshop or GIMP so it has a Prismatic quality.  Finally, make a new 2da entry and put your model, your new texture, and your updated 2da into a new hakpack via the nwhak.exe utility.

Another reason why nobody has answered this is probably because it has to do with animations.
I guess just retexturing one of the bigger dragons to look sort of prismatic wouldn't do the trick.
You'd have to make a version of the prismatic dragon with flying animations. So you'd probably have to make animations for it because none of the bird animations will work well.
I've never done any creature animations and the only animations on tiles I've ever done are night/day animations for the windows and a windmill.
I'm not sure, but I guess there are few people who can make good creatures and fewer even who can make good animations.
If you have requests for custom tiles or placeables, I'm sure you'll get a lot more responses.
It just happened a few hours ago that someone asked for those small flags and someone made them for him.
