September 2010 CC Challenge: Pirates!
« on: September 05, 2010, 03:24:41 pm »

September 2010 CC Challenge is started!

This month's Theme is: "Bucanneer/Pirate's custom content"

Rules:
- it must be fully working ingame
- use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you
- Note that any kind of Custom Content is welcome. Be it Portrait, sounds, music, models, inventory icons, anything that goes well with the theme is welcome!
- Think original
- Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just walk the plank ahoy!

All submissions must be finished, working, and you must provide me with a download link before September 30th, 2010!

The Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about September Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or want to submit ideas/themes for future Monthly Challenges please post in its thread here.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Thanks everyone who will participate! (That would be nice of you to make a little post in here so we know what to expect and show your ideas/progress)

Let's fly the Jolly Roger mateys! ':bandit:'

Edit: adding cool ideas from Frith5:
How about adding a walkable plank to a ship? Could make the edge trigger to splash you to an underwater area.
How about making a genuine Jolly Roger flag, hoistable?
How about making a shoulder pad that thinks it's a parrot?
How about more creatures from the deep, such as octopi, squid, whales, dolphins, and schools of flying fish?
How about a ghost ship, a la the Flying Dutchmen (or the Black Pearl to you newcomers)?
How about adding cannons and cannon-ports to the side of a ship?
How about making climbable rigging? Walkmesh trickery required...
How about making new tattoos, like anchors, skulls, and 'Mom-in-a-heart'?
How about modifying some heads to include a few gold teeth, some piratey beards, etc.?
How about modifying some heads to include a pipe clenched in the teeth, or even a dagger?

I am going to make a (hopefully) stylish yet versatile pirate outfit for both genders.  It will be parts-based.  As such things are large undertakings, I will prioritise the chest, boots, and forearms (as they'll probably be the most distinctive).

I probably won't have as much time for the challenge this month, so I'm going to do a relatively simple object: a pirate themed treasure chest.

I can't resist this one (Aaaar!).  Going to attempt a VFX-based parrot sitting on one shoulder, probably starting with one of the colorful parrots from Rebecca Ann's Birds package.

               kewl XD
another cool one would be a small shoulder chimpazee (with swirling tail!) XD

I think I'm going to do a series of small placeables like variations of bananas (to put on table, holdable, regime as club, a pelt to put on ground (could go with a simple trigger to fall over), as well as variations of coconuts and grapefruit!

@Amethyst: wow never knew about this birds hak OO (or forgot about it), thanks for the link! '<img'>

Est, I'm gonna assume you are planning on Western European style clothes. I'll try my hand at Arabian pirate clothing, and if I have time, updated scimitars to match.

Also, I'll make a point to put up a UV mapping tutorial on my Deviant Art page or on the Q forum soon. May help you guys out a little.

Yes, you folks should really check out the Pirates of the Sword Coast content, just to be aware of what Bioware has already released, if you have not already done so. If you didn't play that module, you might be surprised. As it happens, POTSC contained left/right/both for hook hands and the same for peg legs, plus a whole lot more stuff in the pirate theme.

Please, I'll love ya.  I've gone over Waylon's 3dsmax UV tutorial, and I still get lost, for a relative rookie like me it takes some knowledge of Max for granted.

You can see that tutorial here.

Actually, I was under the impression that all of the content from PotSC was included in 1.69?  Along with all the content from all of the premium mods?

Would it help if I offered my time, live, to help you guys? I can model, UV map, and texture. Not an animation guy.

Project Q has a public IRC channel. We don't really do anything with it. I would be happy to spend an hour or two once a week, helping out.

I can set aside a day, Thursday through Sunday, to be help the community modelers day.
