Any Possibility OF Editing A Stargate Portal?
« on: August 02, 2010, 11:57:26 pm »

               Excuse me?

I really like these portals made by : "v3par"
nwvault.ign.com/View.php

But I also like the stargate portals here, made by : Lord Nikeon.
nwvault.ign.com/View.php

In particular, I would like to ask about the very nice colourful portal in this picture.
nwvault.ign.com/fms/Image.php

What I'm wondering is...... and I'm not qute sure how to call it, so please bare with me.
Does anyone know how to take the middle out of that portal so you see a blank space?
I would like to use it to add "v3par's"  portal rings, which I have shown in a screenshot here.

On its own, I think the stargate portal looks a bit boring, and with v3pars portal rings added in the middle, it would liven it up more, and make it nicely animated.

Since there is no way to contact Lord Nikeon at n.w. vault, would this be an appropriate thing to ask of someone else if they knew how to do it? Or is it a bad idea? In which case, I guess I'll use an alternative instead.

Regards,

Any Possibility OF Editing A Stargate Portal?

It is possible, if you want to dedicate some time to it.  It'll take a bit of work, but the results can be very visually pleasing.

I did something similar to what you are looking to do, but I personalized it for my PW (retextured the ring itself, removed the glowing red chevrons, retextured and added to the "control device", and did a bunch of script work to make it all look nice together and work as I wanted). Link: The Wanderer's Portal (of Aenea).

Good luck!  I'm sure yours will look great, too!

Edited to add: Ah, I think I see what you're really asking.

Removing the "watery plane" should be relatively simple.  Extract the model for the "active" version of the stargate.  Using gmax (or similar software), just remove that plane from the placeable model and re-export it.  If you can open it in Notepad, you can get the same thing done by searching for the part with the bitmap of "ttr_water_01" (or something like that, it's the name of the water texture), then removing all the code for that "piece" of the model and saving.

As far as adding the swirling animated vortex, that's another beast.  I first had to resize it, then change the colors to ones I wanted.  I didn't actually add the portal animation to the model itself, which was causing me problems...I made a new model with just the animation and I line it up via scripting when the portal is activated properly...this way I can leave the portal as a static object with no giant "glow" when moused over or tab/highlighted and still get all the functionality I desire.

Hi Amethyst Dragon '<img'>

I was a bit confused at first, regarding that first part of your reply.
I've only just re-read it again this evening.

I love "The Wanderer's Portal" you are using on your server. It looks very beautiful indeed. '<img'>

Okay.... this seems quite confusing to me, and yes.... removing the center part from the Stargate Portal made by Lord Nikeon is all I am trying to do.... that's it. '<img'>

A very simple thing for someone like you to do perhaps. But I'm very confused with it.
I'm very confussed with your suggestions for both Gmax and Notepad. :-/

Firstly, I don't really know what I need to open in Notepad to be able to search for bitmap "ttr_water_01" (Or whatever) I had thougt it might be the placeables .2da, but there is no reference to any bitmap of that type.
It doesnt work for the .mdl files either.

Again... I'm very confsued here. :-/

Secondly..... I have downloaded Gmax, and don't really understand it much.
I went to "File" and tried to import random files, like the stargte hak, and the .mdl files. But Gmax doesn't support them.

I guess it's a case of trying to search for the actual stargate model in a file of some kind, which again.... I don't really have any knowledge of. ':crying:'

Please could you possibly explain how I find the appropriate model so that I can import it into Gmax, and/or explain how I find the model so that I can open it in Notepad too? It would be very helpful of you.

Regarding the Vortex's made by "vp3par"
I'm not quite sure if I made mysels clear last time. If I didn't.... please accept my apology.
I don't really want to do any editing with them, or fixing them to the inside the stargate portal as such.

All I will do, is to use the placeable vortex(s) in the toolset, and move them to the point inside the portal ring.
Like thus. Portals

Simple enough really.'B)'

There is, but not with the chevrons lit up and the embedded blue circle lit.
