August 2010 CC Challenge!
« on: August 02, 2010, 04:51:56 pm »

August 2010 CC Challenge is started!

This month's Theme is:
"Imagine the private appartments of a High Priestress/Cleric, and design a usefull piece of decorative furniture that would fit well in there."

Rules:
- it must be fully working ingame
- use of original NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you
- it doesn't have to be a placeable (though very likely) maybe some FX or sound could do it, even if I don't see how that could be a furniture I don't want to limitate your creativity '<img'>
- Think original

All submissions must be finished, working, and you must provide me with a download link before August 31st, 2010!

As there was more voices against a ranking than for, there won't be one, so the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about August Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly CC Challenge idea as a whole or want to submit ideas/themes for future Monthly
Challenge please post in its thread here.

If you have a technical question, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Thanks everyone who will participate! (That would be nice of you to make a little post in here so we know what to expect)

Let see what we can create ':wizard:'

Thanks for organising this Jez, it should be fun!

I've decided to do a placeable, a small collection of items designed to rest up against a wall or object, as if the priestess/cleric had left pieces of her armour and gear standing by a wall when not in use.

Already did some quick modeling, here's a basic render:

'Posted

The plane draped over the shield is for a texture with alpha transparency; slightly ragged and worn chainmail.

Excellent...  Let the fun begin!  Might be a good time for me to learn more about animations too... ':wizard:'

EDIT: Lovely, Ben!

               Excellent Ben. Already looking nice!

I've decided to try my hand at a kneeling prayer bench, one that can hold a holy book. Perhaps some of your items will end up leaning against this prayer kneeler? '<img'>

edit: Sort of like this:
'Posted

I'm going for a simple OnUse script that'll bring you to your knees. Heh. Idea is a builder can position this kneeling bench in front of a shrine, tapestry, altar, or whatever. meh. This is kind of exciting, isn't it? '<img'>

This is a great start, guys. Man, I love you CC people! Mind you, I hate you, too -- I'm damned jealous of your talent. '<img'>

Jez, this is an absolutely fantastic idea. I'm quite excited to see everyone's progress. I was going to wish luck to all, but since it's not a competition, I hope everybody has lots of fun.

Boring as it might be, my initial instinct is for a small altar.  Nothing too over-the-top.  (I tend to find the altars already existing in NWN somewhat lacking.  There are the few way-too-evil-looking ones...  Then the roughly hewn rock one...  Then the giant hand.  None of these really speak to the sophisticated priestess!)

I've just re-read the challenge and it says furniture specifically... maybe I should be practising my reading comprehension rather than my modeling!

Want me to start over, Jez, or does it not matter?

Well, Ben, you could place those items on a stand!

Made a start on something. I think it's either going to be a sorta shrine/altar affair with a statue or something in there, or a ridiculously ornamented stone wardrobe thingy. Try to ignore the fancy render - I'm not just showing off, it's what I'm using to generate the texture base (honest!)

               Just as a bystander:

Ben, I think you should stick with what you've got.  It qualifies as Furniture in the Toolset sense of something that you place to make the room feel lived-in, and we need more random evidence-of-habitation placeables in the world.  The organic Stuff-Propped-Against-A-Wall thing you've got going would really rock.

@Ben: that's fine. I used "furniture" for the lack of a better term given my limited english heh. Speaking of that I could use an english secretary to proofread my blurbs '<img'>

(great idea Ben btw ^^ )

@Bard Simpson: the idea is not really mine, but thanks all the same =)

@others: wow great start. I have to find an idea now. Work brain, work!

I'll give this a stab, I'm not making any promises.  I'm thinking something more like a an ornate table or bench.  If you walk into any old cathedral, what are the first things you notice in them usually?  It's usually things like stained glass windows and the ornate funishings.  They tend to be what lends atmosphere to such a place.  I thought Dragon Age did quite a good job of that with all of their chantry buildings.

               Modelling challenges for NWN! Hah!

This sounds like fun. I'll be sure make an entry. Is the deadline August 31 or earlier?

Hey, lets up the ante a little on this.

I'd like to see entries from members or other various NWN projects out there. CEP.. CTP, etc. Lets see what you old timers got. I dare you, I double dog dare you to compete against my team '<img'>
