Please note that I extended the theme to anything commoner's related, NOT just clothing.

This I did not know. I may be able to throw something up anyway, then, as I'll probably be working on a whole bunch of commoner related placeables for Q in the coming weeks (though I'd rather submit something less generic for the challenge).

However, it just occurred to me that my "pirate" outfit might look fairly decent as a male version of Lisa's commoner dressers, as it's fairly plain in design, which would save me the big headache I currently have - namely making a female version.

Another huge benefit I've derived from this challenge is it's inspiration value for folks like me. I've had GMax sat on my machine for a few years, I poke it with a stick from time to time but it has never seemed particularly interested in creating a masterpiece for me. Now I see what you guys can do and I get all inspired, working through tutorials and perhaps in a couple of months you'll have to put up with some man-eating stick figures or bright purple fences with pink posts or maybe, just maybe, I'll improve.  Am I the only one that this has inspited to have a go?                Inspired yes.  Time to do anything about it, no :'(

Full course load of programming is killing all my free time, I have to resort to trolling the forums during my lectures to get my NWN fix.  You know it's bad when you go to school on saturday just to catch up on stuff you didn't get to during the week.

That is a very good idea Six, a male version for the commoner dress is much needed anyway and your outfit would fill that gap nicely.

If I'm wrong and everybody here is actually in love with the idea of making whatever the faceless mob demands every month, then I'll shut up.  But there are no participants yet, and while the month's just begun, I still think that says something.

I have to be honest, I really enjoy the idea of just making 'whatever pops up' every month, rather than something a tad more specific. Although I do think this month's theme is waaay more restricted than last month!

I'd assume the lack of participation is also due to some kind of  burnout after two fruitful months of industrious CC creation and the fact that a few of the active participants have trouble to meet the deadline for Pirates (please don't make them walk the plank!). Like Jez said it shouldn't become a chore and interfere with the creator's RL obligations.

I think the theme should inspire artists, not restrict them. If the themes are open enough, even those CC creators who prefer to do their own thing can find loopholes to get away with it. "Commoner Clothing" wasn't such an open theme, "Commoners" on the other hand is. It's not really that more specific than "Pirates" or "The private appartments of a High Priestress", quite on the contrary.

Anyway, since I don't participate in the challenge, I don't claim to have any say in the matter and btw, if I offer suggestions I don't want them understood as demands or requests. It's all about inspirations and encouragement, just a little cheerleading for Jez and all the talented people here!

Have fun everyone and thank you!

I simply couldn't find the time for last month's Piratey theme, so I didn't get anything done or submitted. I may find time this month to do something Commoner related. I hope so, but real life does tend to get in the way of things here in NWN-land. '<img'>

The idea of the Challenge, to me, is not to challenge each other, but to challenge ourselves. Now, one can challenge oneself in many ways. Creating a type of CC you've never or rarely attempted is one way. Brainstorming up something you've never seen done, and doing it, is another.

As for this month's theme, I cannot really think of a more open-ended 'category' for CC.

1. More children, and of various ages. Sure, we have some boys and girls, but where are the toddlers? How about crawling babies. How about teenagers?

2. Rattles to be held. Toys to play with. A rocker horse to ride. Cribs. Playpens. Sandboxes. Swings. Slides. Teeters. Dollhouses. Dolls. Kites (sure, make 'em holdable and flying up there in the sky!).

3. More occupational things: Masonry tools and half-built walls. Lumber piles. Framed buildings with no walls. Scaffolding. Pullys. Cranes with blocks.  Dock setters putting in piers. Roofers. Potters with wheels. A commoner pushing a wheelbarrow.  A gravedigger. A butcher with a bloody apron and a cleaver. A baker with a rolling pin and a flour-covered apron. A candlestick maker and candles.

4. Lovers sitting holding hands. Pushing a baby carriage. A baby carriage. A wedding party. Bridge. Groom. Minister holding a book.

5. Crops, growing and harvested.

Just a few notions. Good luck to all.

Thanks for all the suggestions, JFK.  :-)

As I said before, I was gonna continue adding variations to my pirate outfit.  But it now occurs to me that perhaps a few extra variations to the tavern terrain in the city interior tileset wouldn't go amiss.  Commoners like to spend time in taverns, right?  (Will cross-post in October thread, just to keep it alive.)

PS: I quite enjoy making random content on request.  It's nice to feel that the stuff one is making is actually wanted by yhe community.  But if there's ever a theme to which I feel an active aversion, I can just sit out that month.  No harm done.

               Theme Suggestions:

Native American Stuff (could include things like placeable buildings, tools, artwork, burial mounds, etc., new head models, new weapon models, new horses, new clothing, sounds, and lots of other stuff)

Underdark Societies Stuff
(could include things from all sorts of Underdark societies...drow (but please not all spider stuff...there's more to drow than spider obsession), mindflayers, beholders, deep gnomes, and more)

Elemental Planes Stuff (creatures, structural placeables, tilesets, weapons, armor, environmental effects (scripting is CC too!), sounds, etc.)

Statuary Garden (probably mostly placeables...statues, benches, walls, paths, fountains, but would be a great place for custom scripting as well for magical statues, strange stone to flesh outcomes, etc.)

Winter Stuff (could include new clothing models, new creatures, snow/ice placeables, winter life tools/structures (igloo, dog sled + team, firewood pile covered in snow), lots of scripting opportunities, winter sounds, etc.)

Poor Folk Stuff (could include makeshift shacks or slum buildings, beggars, dirty-looking little kids with trinkets to sell, piles of refuse/garbage (great place for some rats to live), litter, new sounds, patched clothing, worn-looking weapons, hanging laundry lines, pretty much anything for rural and/or urban poor life which doesn't look all shiny and new like much of the current NWN content)

Hot Desert Stuff (new desert plants and animals, sand and stone structures (that blend into a sandy desert area), environmental scripting, new sounds, new clothing, new heads, new wood/cloth structures, etc.)

Just some broad themes that could use a variety of custom content, rather than just all model work.

How about the good and neutral aligned Outer Planes? CODI gave us a lot of cool demons and devils and yugoloths but what do we have to keep the balance in the Multiverse? In the end we're all going to Hell (or the Abyss) if we don't get more back-up from the Upper or Neutral Planes!

Creatures dwelling the Outlands would be a challenge, too. But not necessarily only creatures, heck, I'd welcome any type of Planescape content to complement what CODI begun and allow builders to take a break from the Forgotten Realms for a change. '<img'>

Btw, +1 for The Amethyst Dragon's suggestions, too! '<img'>

Just a couple of lame suggestions from me.

Some flat stuff so that those of us who couldn't get a 3d modeling program to work even with the assistance of a higher power, can contribute. What I mean here are things that can be easily created just using a text editor and a graphics manipulation program. e.g. Skyboxes, footprints, cracks, etc.

Arcane space stuff 'cos there's next to nothing on the vault. For example look at all the user designed ships here. Then there are all the creatures/monsters/NPCs that have not yet been modelled.

So...  If the suggestion for headgear wins out for January's content (as seems quite likely), how are we supposed to implement it?  As standard helms replacing the whole head?  As robe-hats?  As VFX-based headgear?  I'm a little confused at a technical level.

I'd say if you're going to make something for that theme, pretty much anything goes.  Helms would be the easiest (one model), while the robes and vfx headgear would require multiple models for different races/phenotypes/genders.

Yeah, I'm honestly quite sick of all the race-and-pheno work for now.  I'm thinking it'll have to be a helm for me - or maybe a head only showing a teeny little bit of skin.

I'm wondering if we need to take a month off, as it were, to finish up on the previous month's worth of content?  Full 'I told you so' points to DD on this one!  *sassy grin*  He warned me we were heading into trouble with the holidays and suggested a delay a while back.

There are still outstanding files due in from Ancient Civ and nothing actually sent in yet for the Field of War theme (which was due in today).  I could even merge and post all the 2010 content as a 'year in review' type of a thing.  That gives y'all a "free" month to wrap up any loose ends or tweaks with things you are not quite happy with from the 2010 content and start out fresh with 2011 goodies (current ongoing theme Field of War then picking up with the current poll winner - Head Decorations in Feb.) instead of constantly behind each month.
