Animal Companion Skill
« on: September 19, 2015, 02:49:29 pm »

For my lvl 7 ranger, I can't figure out how to use the animal companion skill.  I believe I'm supposed to click on the skill and then on an animal. but I don't know how to place the icon on my hotbar.  I don't have the skill on any of my radial menus (but it shows I've trained 9 points on my character sheet).  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Right-click animal and chose animal empathy (lowest one).

Does not work on magical beasties or beetles, spiders etc.

Do you mean "animal companion" or "animal empathy"?

They should both show up in the radial menu under "special abilities". If you took points in animal empathy, and you are level four or higher, they are both in that radial menu somewhere, and can be placed onto the quickbar. You just need to look around the radial menu a little more thoroughly.

(Place abilities onto the quickbar by right-clicking on a quickbar space, NOT by clicking the radial menu on your character.)

"Animal companion" summons a fighting animal that you should have selected on your level up screen starting at level four. (Or maybe level five?) It will be a level one summons, unfortunately. Rangers summon their animal companions at four levels lower than druids, just as paladins turn undead at four levels lower than clerics.

"Animal empathy" allows you to attempt to charm a natural animal. It gains bonuses from high charisma. You attempt it by clicking "animal empathy" from either the radial menu or from a quickbar button, and then clicking on the animal. The DC of the skill is based on the level and strength of the animal you want to charm.

Neither of those last two things is quite right. The ranger gets the feat to summon an animal companion at level 6 instead of level 1, when the druid gets it. However, the companions summoned will be at the same power for the same level character, druid or ranger (assuming they is level 6+). For example, a level 10 druid will summon the same panther as a level 10 ranger.

Also, a paladin turns the same as a cleric 2 levels lower.

Whoops, thanks for the correction, Mr. Zork!

Either way, I wonder if we have helped the OP with his problem?

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I'm talking about the skill "Animal Empathy" (not "Animal Companion").  Under my character sheet I see the skill listed - I've trained 10 points in it.  Neither right nor left clicking on it in that list does anything.  It also does not show up in my radial menus anywhere or if I right click an empty hot bar button.  Maybe, as werelynx suggests, if I right click on an animal a list will open that shows animal empathy?  I'll try that next time I come across an animal.

On another subject - what is "defensive casting mode"?

Thanks again!

Okay, I just went into the OC and created a new level one ranger just to answer your question.

The ability does not show up by right-clicking the character.

Right-click on a quickbar button, then select "Other Abilities". For me, "Other Abilities" was to the south, at the bottom of the radial menu. Under "Other Abilities", there is a green icon of an animal, I think a wolf, being held in the palm of an extended hand, and if you cursor over it, it says "Animal Empathy". Left click on that icon to put it into the quickbar.

When you want to charm an animal, left click on your new quickbar button, then left click on the animal.

Defensive Casting Mode is another one of those abilities that needs to be put into a quickslot, and it must be activated in order for the feat "Combat Casting" to work. The character cannot move while in the mode. Ironically, it forces a concentration check roll even if the character is not under direct attack, so it sometimes causes unnecessary casting failures. That is, it hurts more than it helps. Few casters take the feat and use the mode. The times I've tried it, it *caused* casting failures more often than it prevented them.
