Wildshape - help!
« on: August 20, 2015, 09:19:51 pm »

I've just levelled up as a druid to where I can wildshape, but I don't understand how I'm supposed to attack enemies in this mode?  When I click on enemies (or use radial menu and select attack icon) my panther/bear just sits there taking hits, and only makes the odd attack now and again.  It's not even 1 attack per round; more like 1 every six or ten.

What am I doing wrong?

Right, I can only seem to attack when Attacks of Opportunity present themselves, but I can't attack otherwise.  Is this a bug?  Is Tony K's AI mod or the familiar/companion mod (recommended by these forums) by causing it?  Or am I doing something stupidly wrong?

What mod are you playing? What version of NWN are you running? What's in your override folder?

Official campaign (1.69 with SoU + HotU) from GOG.com.  Only mods installed are Tony K's AI mod, and a Better Craft Magic mod and Familiar and Companion Fixes mod (from The Krit).  That's it.

Reverting the override folder to its original state has no impact. '<img'>

Which shape are you using (and at what level) and which enemy are you attacking? I think there are a couple issues with size and some of the shapes. I recall seeing cases where a large shape can't target a huge opponent, though it may be specific to the bounding boxes for the particular models. I know my mage Shapechanged to Iron Golem form sometimes can't touch dragons.

Also, make sure you aren't near some obstruction that is keeping you from reaching the target, like a doorway or something. Sometimes those can hold you up, even if it doesn't seem like they should be in the way.

I'm level 5 and I've tried wolf, bear, panther, badger.  Tried reverting the override folder back to its original state, tried another save, tried DebugMode with other saves to level me up to Wildshape and test it; absolutely nothing works.  I would have thought this game might have had most of its bugs ironed out a decade after its release, but I guess not!

Tried selecting a premade character as well and used console to get to level 11.  Tested Wildshape against goblins in OC Prelude and still, no attacks.  What a shoddy product!

Now that you describe it that way, this is familiar to me. I think there was a 1.69 bug where a shifted toon is assigned some command (like equip the skin item) by the horse scripts and that would lock up the PC's input queue somehow and make it so that the toon could not attack. I don't recall if The Krit fixed this or posted a workaround for it. I will do a little searching and see what I can find.

Okay, the Wiki's polymorph article describes this and a workaround for it. There is also a link to an override fix, but I am having trouble getting to the new vault at the moment, so you might have to try the workaround first. It's not a difficult one.

In addition, a polymorphed creature is blocked from horse riding, and a creature currently riding a horse is blocked from initiating a polymorph (possibly unless the spell in question has been customized). The standard implementation of the latter restriction has the side-effect of often causing a character to become unable to make attacks after the first polymorph of a game (per module or server reset). This can be worked around by canceling the first polymorph and initiating a second one. Alternatively, the "Remove PC Properties" override from the Vault eliminates this problem.

Thank you so much!  This is exactly the problem I was experiencing!  And thank you for the article link; most helpful.

Yeah, just to confirm, exiting and re-entering the polymorph should fix the issue from then on.  That said, Wild Shape has a lot of inherent issues, but good luck and hope you have fun!  The game's definitely worth playing in spite of Wild Shape being less than ideal, feel free to post on this forum for advice/questions/etc.  Especially regarding community made campaigns/worlds.

I installed the Community Patch 1.71 this morning; may I ask, do I need to start a new game for ALL the changes to come into effect, or can I continue normally with previous saves?

it will work automatically no need to start a new game

EDIT: you can now spawn PC Widget Tool and alter several game rules, since many of those affect polymorph and you play druid it definitely check it.
