New RPG in development based on NWN HoF Module Series
« on: July 22, 2015, 05:31:18 pm »

Very cool news here. There's a new RPG in development and preparing for a Kickstarter that caught my eye yesterday.

Mooncrest, from independent game company KnightMayor, which has developer roots at Bioware. What caught my eye is that the sidekick of the protagonist is named Pirotase and looks curiously like a drow. Secondly, the protagonist is a paladin. Thirdly, they are described as having a "buddy-cop" type of relationship.

Those facts got my mind spinning because I was sure I had heard of a drow named Pirotase who reluctantly served as a sidekick to a Paladin. In fact, I remembered it as one of my favorite series of single-player modules. There were 2 modules with the builder intending to do a third, but never got around to it. The story is very compelling, most especially the interpersonal development of the two heroines. After playing the first two modules, I was extremely disappointed to find out that, for whatever reason, the third and final installment was never completed.

My interest piqued, I searched a little bit about Mooncrest, and it seems that it is, indeed, the same builder and appears to be built off the same concept. I'd imagine that it's very likely that there's a similar story (though hopefully this one will have an ending!), but that's cool, as the first two were so good and I never got to see how it ended.

If you've never played the NWN modules, you should download them right now and play them (when you're not playing Arenthyor, of course).

It's pretty cool to see a NWN module having ultimately been the proving ground for a compelling story that could eventually make it to the big leagues as a stand-alone RPG.   I'll support it.  Good luck to them!

Very cool, indeed!

Without screenshots i cant say anything if it interests me or not. I always judge medieval rpgs based on their authenticity first... The models and textures from the cutscene look to simple and boring. I dont need high poly models but textures need a specific quality/ details or must be stylish enough. I love low poly models they just have to look "good" or interesting....

So right now I dont feel it '<img'>

Maybe it´s the witcher 1 look that has influenced me since then and i cant enjoy stuff that is not similar to it.

Thats why i dont enjoy the Dragon age series... it looks like a reality TV soap opera in a teeny fantasy world!

They were saying everything from the models to vfxs and textures was temporary. I certainly hope so. I especially hope the voice acting will be better. I couldn't stand playing a character with a voice like that.

The two parts of the Paladin trilogy were the best story-driven modules for NWN 1 I played. So I'd like to see how the story ends and I could forgive bad graphics, but what was shown on Steam isn't just bad, the graphics were ugly and the voice acting horrible. But as they said, it's all just temporary.
Though I think they should have left a better first impression.

Very true,

I think it's cool, though, that something which was first/originally created as a community-made NWN1 module was in development as a 'real' RPG.

I've no vested interest in it other than having enjoyed playing the modules (which if you haven't, I'd highly recommend) and that through it's connection to NWN and Bioware, NWN1 is tangentially relevant to the news.

Heh, if we wanted to, we could co-opt this news into advertising NWN1 to the gaming audience...(if you like the idea of Mooncrest...for $9.99, you can get NWN1, download the first 2 installments of the Paladin trilogy, plus a lifetime of other modules and fun!).

I loved this series, but years have past since I reconciled myself to never getting an ending for it.  I'm beyond thrilled by this news.  I'll definitely be backing it on Kickstarter.

I wonder why the art features female paladin.. does this game discriminate males?

Ok. I'm just kidding. This is nice news.

Is this to suppress the "romance" between paladin and sidekick?(paladin being chaste etc.)

Or do they want go lesbian route?

In the modules Pirotase was so much younger than the PC that it should have felt awkward even for non-paladins to romance her. I had no idea that the author was thinking of a female PC. The relationship seemed like a fosterfather/wayward child releationship to me.

I first read about this on steam over a year ago. I wonder why it's making waves now? Also, they really ought to update their steam page. They'll get so much more free advertising that way.
