@Grani & KlatchainCoffee - According to Trent, for an Overhaul he'd "rewrite the renderer, 'Director's Cut' the storyline and jack hard into the community for ideas on where to go." So there wouldn't be any impact on pre-existing modules just, say, how those modules are expressed, visually. I wouldn't expect Overhaul would redo much of the content (because that's a shipload of work) but, instead, maybe make a new tileset or focus on updating the art assets in some other, very specific and limited way. Maybe toss in some functionality, like a programmable menu system or something like that.
I think it's encouraging that they _say_ they'll go to the community for ideas - it would be foolish not to, since folks around here have been pushing the limits of the game for many years now and may have a clearer view of what's needed to push the whole thing to new heights. Removing existing limitations and introducing new (backwards-compatible) features come to mind. Also, in terms of producing the said features and content there are a good number of talented potential 'guns for hire' around here... '>
But really, in light of the above interest/plans, I think it would be worth for the veterans around here to put their heads together and thinking of how a company like that may see a return on their investment without it having too detrimental an effect on the spirit of the free-sharing creative cooperation that we've become somewhat used to by now. Not easy, but perhaps not impossible either.
Other than re-marketing the revamped game itself, there may still be other avenues in producing quality SP modules (a return to a previous strategy), but perhaps even something in multiplayer, though it's tough to imagine a 'paid-for' PW working economically, simply because of the man-hours and necessary inspiration/teamwork needed to put together and maintain a good one. Would people pay on regular basis for a regularly run 'DMed RPG story series' in an age where people are reluctant to pay even for watching high-profile TV-series like GoT? On the other hand, people everywhere are prepared to spend money on total shite if it's marketed well enough to them, and a well-run DMed campaign can trump a good deal of entertainment out there on the sheer fun and immersive enjoyment levels.
I think there are a whole number of possibilities, but it's another matter whether there are sufficient resources and will to realise them.
