What is NWNX2 and do people still use it?

I'm about halfway through designing my PW and I started reading about NWNX2.


I downloaded it and put the files where they said to, cranked up the .exe and it sat there looking pretty like a useless box on my screen.


Is it supposed to launch the game?


There are no buttons on the box that I can push and it wont let me change the module name...

NWNX2 is a wrapper for your nwserver application. It enables additional functionality beyond the scope of the game. It is often used to access a database (MySQL, PostGRE, or what have you) and also provides additional hooks to the engine to do very interesting things in game. When it is installed and used to start your server (via script), you can make use of it by setting strings on the module that it looks for and acts on.


 


You can read about NWNX2 at its forums. They should have you covered with regards to how to set up NWNX2 on your server.

I have tried for three days to sign up for their forum. Every single time it tells me I did not do the Kapta correct although I know i did.


I use web based email so there is no way for me to contact them about this problem. I have cleared my cookies to no avail, even downloaded Chrome to see if that would work. I made sure I even used the correct case in all letters upteen times.


Apparently I will never be able to get into their fort knox-tight forum.


Is NWNX2 supposed to launch the game?


When I launch it all I see is a box that has no buttons on it, no way to manipulate it further.


 


I read the MySQL site and have no idea what they are talking about. I learned MWNScript from NWN...is a database a place that has models that you can import into the game to replace current creature models like a hak? Or do I still have to build the creature and make a hak? What are hooks to the engine?


Will I no longer need to build hakpaks to limit class choices and change race names?


I read something about languages....does it have something that makes elves unintelligible to those who don't know elvish or did I misread?

It is not a replacement for HAKs. You don't need NWNX for anything you describe. NWNX allows you to alter the state of the server's virtual machine during runtime. If you don't know what that means, then don't worry about it.


 


The stuff you are talking about BTW is achievable with the engine unaltered by NWNX. Languages: handled by script. New art assets: HAK pack. Limit class choices, alter names etc.... HAK pack.

Try to run NWNX as an administrator. The reason it doesn't do anything is because it's supposed to launch a server on its own after launch, but that doesn't happen if it's not run as an administrator.

Thanks! I ran as administrator and a second window came up that looks like a server. I am assuming that what I do next is load the module in that window and then Direct Connect normally to the IP that appears above it?


UPDATE: Yep that worked. If It just reboots my PW server and thats all it will be worth it.

You can edit the nwnx2.ini file to specify which module you want to open so you don't need to do it manually each time.

That's what it does at the minimum, but people find most use in various plugins that can extend functionality of the game. For example you could access some new scripting functions that would be impossible to create without NWNX.


 


It's a good application for PWs, not so much for single-player modules. You're building a PW, so you might find a use for NWNX sooner or later.
