Modules Hall of Fame
« on: August 04, 2014, 05:48:56 pm »

The Modules Hall of Fame has been reconstructed on the new vault.

This is a reasonable guide to the very best fan-made content. 65% of the 654 modules are already available on the new vault, with more being added every day. EDIT : All 654 modules have been migrated.

Bear in mind, this is a snapshot taken in 2013, frozen in time, so it's also worth looking out for newer material.

Credit for the heavy lifting goes to the many community members who have given their free time to migrate content from the archive - Fester Pot and I have just made this index as icing on the cake.

Hail Proleric.

Well done from an old old friend who again found a bit of hobby time between life/career/children/elder care '<img'>

I had not idea what state the game had become these past few years. It is remarkable just how good it is thanks to people like you.

Suggestion: Not to make your life miserable '<img'>

In the old days the Hall of Fame became diluted over time with voter inflation. A long and overly debated subject and I have no intention to reopen that debate.

However sorting the vault Hall of Fame by number of votes - or better still number of votes/total downloads was "the real truth".

Regardless of some crass scores and occasional troll votes - the votes/download ratio told a very important story. People cared enough to comment. In this manner some older modules like (1) Cormyrean Nights (2) Runes of Blood - Wombat (3) Island Adventures - LadyO&Sir and BGHughs stuff came forward. There is no question that Andarian/Ole FesterPot/Baldercarn deserve their time in the sun - they are great authors.... but there are many gems and Andarian/Ole FP/ Baldercarn still shine in the vote / download ratio.

               90% migrated '<img'>

Anyone can join in.

It's also helpful that players are giving feedback on the newly-migrated material.

...but what is that on Hello Kitty Island? Surely not a ...squirrel...

Does the new vault show the comments for the projects that were posted when the projects were on the IGN vault? Those were a hugely useful resource. Many modules (and other projects) have lots of Q&A and troubleshooting material in the comments that are particularly useful and which are unlikely to be replicated with new comments, since many of the project authors no longer monitor questions about their projects and fewer players are playing to post solutions to other players having an issue somewhere.

No, unfortunately, the new vault doesn't show the old comments. In most cases, as far as I can see, only the first page (the most recent) was archived back in 2013. For what it's worth, it's still possible to view that page, if you get the old project id from the project page and look it up on rolovault; the file is called index.htm.

In theory, we could "stuff" all that information into the description field of the project (assuming the buffer would hold it, that is) but that would make the project display quite bloated and unwieldy, IMO.  As long as Rolo's back-up exists and the ID was entered correctly, with just one additional step to view the discussions (like Proleric already suggested), it's all there. Would be nice if there were a discrete section indexed by project ID, linked on the corresponding project entry in the new Vault entitled "Legacy Feedback" or something like that where we could copy that information.  It would be a nightmare for any migrator to enter all those comments separately like the new comments are being posted today. Right now, though, it seems more a cosmetic consideration than the primary task demands... migrating the 40K+ project files themselves for all to use and enjoy.

But I do agree with your premise.  Some modules can be difficult to complete without some tips or guidance along the way and some hakpaks can be ornery to install correctly.

hold the phone here, i thought my archive script grabbed multiple comments pages?

i remember doing testing on that and i'm quite sure it grabbed them for at least the scripts section.  maybe i dropped the ball on the modules (or other project categories).  i don't have a local archive of testing those.

dare we hope that rolo has them and doesn't realize?

acomputerdood, as I read these other comments, the implication appears to be that the comments were gathered. It's just that the new vault isn't yet set up to show the archived comments. It should be very doable, though. And, highly useful, IMO. Even if there is just a mechanism to click on "Archived Comments" that opens up another window or something with the older content.

Since no one more knowledgable has replied - the only archive I'm aware of is ftp://neverwintervault.org/rolovault/projects/nwn1/modules/' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='nofollow external'>here. In almost every case, as anyone can verify for themselves, there is only one index page, corresponding to the most recent comments. If more detail was originally harvested, I don't know where it is now.

P.S. If anyone dips into that archive, please be aware of the authors who don't want that material reposted.

strange, you're right.  the only full(ish) archive i have from testing is from "scripts".  i see that project #111 (antitheft v112) has 2 pages of comments in my archive, but the rolo backup only has page 1.

i wonder what broke in the process?
