I have no issue with any agent (like Schneider) sent in to take hits, like one of those shooting gallery ducks, for the corporation. However, he is not in position to set policy. That's what J2 Global is doing, it's the manager's job to expedite that policy, and the reason should be obvious to all. Suck in as many potential high-profit, low infrastructure industries into it's revenue-spewing cloud technology including (unfortunately) digital entertainment (that part touches us directly). Not surprising, as far as J2 Global is concerned, support of legacy gaming is an unnecessary drain on their business model. It's too bad we, as fans of a great game like NWN, have been caught in the web of corporate acquisitions but that is the reality and probably just the tip of the iceberg. I suspect there will a lot more disappointed gamers out there beyond the realm of Neverwinter Nights. It's just coincidental that NWN lasted so long, inspired so many to give unselfishly of their time and labor (and still are!) and developed a fan base that cannot be substantiated economically... in their corporate perspective, that is.
My issue is not that divestiture is being done, though it is disappointing that it has. My problem is in the WAY that it has been expedited. A manager cannot be "in touch" and "out-of-touch" at the same time. Either he is in control or not. I believe he is and that nothing can be administered without his direct authorization. He and those that serve under him are OBLIGATED to forewarn users of the cutoff, IMO as a former CR manager of a high-visibility communications corporation. I realize the eventual curtailment has been tossed around in news articles and discussions in the past, but while the Vault was being maintained in a business-as-usual fashion, there was absolutely no reason to suspect that it would be disconnected without at least a cut-off date announced. I mean... what exactly did they expect to gain by keeping the remaining subscribers in the dark? A week's longer term of resentment? Boggles the mind, people. Even one as numb as mine.
Compared to the size of the clientele involved in J2's portfolio, we are a pimple on an engorged elephant's butt. Thank you J2 of reminding us of that fact.
