Where to get Modules now?

Regarding the new vault, can anyone upload the modules there, not only the authors? I apologize if the question is stupid.

I think all it requires is you being a member and you can upload the mod.

they just ask for you to give credit to everyone who made whichever mod.

I've replied at length to Mr. Klein by email, and am planning to write and post a version of it on my blog as an "open letter" to IGN about the shutdown of the Vault. I've also taken the opportunity to express my concern about the matter on Twitter, and @ linked some of the accounts of IGN's management team.

That's a bummer.  Has been happening with the morrowind community too.  Something to perhaps try...

I just downloaded as a test The Prophet Chapter 3 from the way back machine by browsing the top modules list.  Last crawl of nwvault.ign.com was on May 2014.

Go to web.archive.org and put in nwvault.ign.com

Not perfect and will more than likely not have all files but it should have all the comments, ratings etc etc.

Worth a shot if you're looking for something.

Throw a lilly and a hand full of dirt in the hole. She's dead.
We can erect a stone over the mound saying, Here lies the vault. Yet another victim of a faceless corperate beast, bent on world domination.

My heart goes out to Rolo and Werelynx. I cannot not imagine the amount of time and effort they put into that site. I'll thank you even if the beast won't. THANK YOU !

I think what galls me the most is the way it is being done. "Hey everybody, we're going to screw ya, but please don't stop buying our other products." I will never waste my money on any product offered by IGN.

I will finish my current build and post it on the NEW Vault.

Power to the people !

Some extremely and unexpectedly good news: IGN co-founder and General Manager Peer Schneider, who I'd tagged on my tweet, replied to it with the following:

"We were surprised, too. Technical issue + unfortunate redirect. Hopefully we can restore!"

His reply also went to the others in IGN management that I'd tagged on my tweet.

While I don't think this means for certain that the Vault will be restored (there is still that word "hopefully" in his response), this is the most positive news I've seen yet.

Fore now all the modules that have been migrated to the new vault by community volunteers to the Vault 2.0 can be found here:

I suppose age has brittled my optimistic viewpoint, at least as far as putting faith in corporate types with their skill in spin-doctoring (seems like they really are unable to communicate without censoring themselves).  I seem to remember the legacy boards and Gamespy fiascos passing out communications containing phrases like "we are actively working to restore" and "normal service will be available in the near future" or words to that respect.   The keywords meant to impact our collective cerebrums in this message are "surprised", "technical", "unfortunate" and "hopefully".  Do we really all need to have doctorates in social psychology to see where this is going?

Funny.  No mention of words like "streamlining resources" or "cost-effectiveness".  I guess he's really just one of our pals who is wearing a special pointy hat.

A tweet only allows you 144 characters, and he was already using a lot of that to tag four of us in his response. There's no room in a Twitter dialogue for extraneous words, so I wouldn't expect him to have been able to say anything more than what he did.

As for whether his response is genuine, or intended to be spin or damage control: We'll see. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until demonstrated otherwise.

... What? For the most part (or even at all) formal messages either did not get through or are ignored, but a simple twitter outcry gets a response in less than 24 hours?

I've communicated with Peer before and I have always found his responses to be authoritative and genuine.  I know there has been some frustration expressed by people in this thread and also suspicion- both of which are natural.  But I really can't stress enough that IGN (as odd as it may sound) has actually given the NWN community the best break outside of Bioware who continued to mercilessly patch the game, itself, for years.  This is kind of meta but if one looks at the whole of the Vault network and all the games that had Vaults, it's almost always the case that the particular community for that game petered out before IGN's filehosting did and the lion's share of Vaults were kept up, regardless of participation or activity.

I think the old Vault & the new Vault are great and I'm happy they exist, but I'd still like to put the idea out there that shooting the content into Usenet is going to be the best way to protect the community's content and make it available for years to come.  Right now, the Usenet provider I use has retention time of almost six years for content uploaded to the main binary newsgroups.  While it's not as optimal as either of the Vaults for actually accessing the data, it does cover the aspect of safely storing the content.  Sort of an emergency "Plan B".  To think out loud, NZB files could even possibly be added to the new Vault's download pages to compliment the existing, direct, downloads.

I threw out a tweet as well and got another response from Talmadge Blevins.  Probably helpful if anyone else with a twitter account leaves a message about they're hopeful to see the vault restored -- helps reinforce that it's not 1-2 people upset about it.  Just something concise and polite to raise consciousness.

Thanks for the updates guys.  There is still content here that I'd like a crack at and I hope your efforts give us a little more time to get at it.

I have to agree with HipMaestro. I'm too old and have seen this too many times before. Tell us Gas is going up to $6 a gallon and we won't complain at 5. I still have all my shortcuts to the old vault. I would hope the optimist are correct, but I'm still wearing my walking shoes.

I have no issue with any agent (like Schneider) sent in to take hits, like one of those shooting gallery ducks, for the corporation.  However, he is not in position to set policy.  That's what J2 Global is doing, it's the manager's job to expedite that policy, and the reason should be obvious to all.  Suck in as many potential high-profit, low infrastructure industries into it's revenue-spewing cloud technology including (unfortunately) digital entertainment (that part touches us directly).  Not surprising, as far as J2 Global is concerned, support of legacy gaming is an unnecessary drain on their business model.  It's too bad we, as fans of a great game like NWN, have been caught in the web of corporate acquisitions but that is the reality and probably just the tip of the iceberg.  I suspect there will a lot more disappointed gamers out there beyond the realm of Neverwinter Nights.  It's just coincidental that NWN lasted so long, inspired so many to give unselfishly of their time and labor (and still are!) and developed a fan base that cannot be substantiated economically... in their corporate perspective, that is.

My issue is not that divestiture is being done, though it is disappointing that it has.  My problem is in the WAY that it has been expedited.  A manager cannot be "in touch" and "out-of-touch" at the same time.  Either he is in control or not.  I believe he is and that nothing can be administered without his direct authorization.  He and those that serve under him are OBLIGATED to forewarn users of the cutoff, IMO as a former CR manager of a high-visibility communications corporation.  I realize the eventual curtailment has been tossed around in news articles and discussions in the past, but while the Vault was being maintained in a business-as-usual fashion, there was absolutely no reason to suspect that it would be disconnected without at least a cut-off date announced.  I mean... what exactly did they expect to gain by keeping the remaining subscribers in the dark?  A week's longer term of resentment?  Boggles the mind, people.  Even one as numb as mine.

Compared to the size of the clientele involved in J2's portfolio, we are a pimple on an engorged elephant's butt. Thank you J2 of reminding us of that fact.
