NWN Vault is currently gone and there needs to be a new place where mods and content can be uploaded as the old vault can no longer be used for uploading content.

There is one: the New Neverwinter Vault. Stop by, log on, and help out if you want to see this happen.

It looks like exactly the same server configuration error that caused the last Vault outage. Has anyone messaged the IGN admins about the problem (or know who to contact)? They were able to fix it quickly before once they became aware of it.

I have a contact at IGN who I've worked with to help clear up issues with the Vault (and the Vault Network, sometimes) before and who I wrote to, today, about the issue.  When I hear something solid back from them, I'll pass it on.  I've spent a decent amount of time crawling around the whole of the Vault Network in the past and I'm 50/50 on whether this particular change was intentional (which is what it sort of looks like) or whether it was the result of some technical issue.

I think he already knew about that judging by his first post in the thread.

So long live the new NWN Vault

To Hell with IGN.

Is it possible to host a public FTP file server or something like that with all the old vault files? A lot of vault entries are not cached and therefore the download link cannot be accessed.

Perhaps I'm doing it wrong. I messed with host files before and I simply can't get it to work. Does adding the line let you go onto nwvault as if nothing happened, or does it just let you download from the download link at the vault entry? I saved the changes and restarted my browser but it did not work.

It lets you onto the vault as if nothing happened.

1. Open My Computer

2. Click on the C drive

3. Click on the Windows folder

4. Click on the System32 folder

5. Click on the drivers folder

6. Click on the etc folder

7. At this point you should see a file called "hosts" (without the quotes)

8. Open the file

9. Edit the hosts by adding "69.10.25.55 nwvault.ign.com" (without the quotes) at the bottom

10. Save the file

11. Restart browser (may be able to skip this step)

12. Should be good to go

Your hosts file should NOT be "hosts.txt" it should just be "hosts"

Note for folks having trouble: Vista and upwards requires the program editing the hosts file to have elevated privileges. To do this, right click on whatever program you wish to edit the hosts file with and select "Run as administrator" from the context menu. From there, you can navigate to the location from the program's own Open dialog box.

Worked fine for me, and I didn't have to restart my browser.

Finally! Sweet, El Squatto!  Perhaps MM could link your post into his since he listed the full sequence.  Running on XP I would never have realized this fact (but who knows what the future has in store for this ancient box).  Will certainly save non-XP users some teeth gnashing fer sure.

So are they going to fix it, kill it, ignore it?

Figures.  My kid had just gotten into PrC, for all the extra classes, and I had just figured out how the whole PrC3.5 - CEP2.4 system works, had found two mods to set up, two, wanted to put up many many more, and then *poof* gone like disco.

I looked through the whole router thing by FP, but that stuff is Greek to me.  I'm just a user.  I was a lawyer, not a software engineer.  Besides it looked a little legal.  Then again, I bought a better modem just for Napster, back in the day.  *evil grin*

When NWConnections died, it was a slow painful death, like cancer, and I know what that is like.  This was more getting hit by a truck.  The paramedics claim they can see a heartbeat, but anyone can see on the road that there's a lot of blood....

You can still get some of the PRC mods on the vault, if you need some links to some mods let me know I will gladly get those for you. I also Love using the PRC and CEP together and currently I am working on the old Legends of Chance mod which I will be including both the PRC and CEP into, I will be making an effort to get a team together to try and get this mod up and running sooner. But if i can help you get mods you want let me know. '<img'>

Unfortunately, the all the Vault sites have been shut down and redirected. Some of the information can be found in the Wiki, but that's all the information I have. Sorry for the inconvenience.

               Well, that really sounds final.

Migrating files to the new vault has ramped up considerably, but there's plenty of scope for everyone to join in, before the files are lost.

Pick a favourite entry on the old vault.

Search for the title on the new vault (to avoid duplication).

Add Content > Project

Fill in the form, copying the old vault content

You'll need to download the old screenshots and files before uploading, of course.

The Advanced screenshot option lets you drag them in one go, like the files.

Description pasting in IE is bugged, so use another browser + ctrl V (or open summary, switch to plain text, paste, switch to html, correct line feeds).

All he's doing is telling us what we already know, and admitting that he doesn't know what's going on. Moreover, some of it is also wrong, because the Vault sites -haven't- been shut down; they've -only- been redirected. It sounds like this isn't someone who really knows whether this was a deliberate policy decision, let alone was involved in making it. I'll wait for something more substantial in the way of an announcement.

That's not to say we shouldn't redouble our efforts to stand up the new Vault in the meantime. Even if this turns out to have been a mistake, it still emphasizes how fragile the availability of the old Vault is becoming with time. It will go away sooner or later, so better that we be ready for it sooner rather than later.

Further conversation is certainly seeming that way...

Me: Will the redirected Vaults continue to be available in the state they are now?

Him: I'm not sure what capacity they're actually available in, but the goal is to have the information incorporated into the Wikis.

Me: The goal is to take projects that sometimes take up over a gigabyte of space (though most are under 10 MB) and are available to download and incorporate that into a wiki somehow?  We're not talking about web pages, we're talking about everything from new campaigns, new tilesets, new creature models, scripting systems, etc.  How does that work in a wiki?

Him: The downloads likely won't be transferred over, because they take up so much server space.

Me: So how is *any* information being "incorporated" into the Wikis?  The entire point of the vault is the downloads.

Waiting on a response, only been about 10 minutes.  I'm only hoping that news of the problem might catch the attention of higher ups but this guy doesn't seem to know what's going on.

Funnily enough, it turns out IGN DOES have a "NWN wiki" that's completely pathetic.  Presumably the NWN Vault was supposed to link to that instead of the MMO thing.

P.S. Oh, and thanks for moving that guy's comments on the IGN site, he's an idiot.  It's not about defending IGN, it's about not making us look bad.

Or perhaps -- I hope -- the actual intent was to redirect that NWN WIki to the same Wiki that the NWN MMORPG is on, and whoever got assigned the task didn't know what he was doing and redirected the wrong subdomain. That's what it's looked like to me all along. As I wrote on another forum:

If they really did intend to cut the Vault off, the least they could do would be to make an announcement rather than keep us guessing. That's one of the things that still makes me think this was a server configuration error. My (optimistic) guess is it was some noob in website support was told to redirect some other page about the NWN MMORPG to the Wiki, and couldn't tell the difference between it and the Vault.

And you're welcome about the page edit. I had to restrain myself from editorializing further. Your comments were right on target. I was tempted to go back and restore them as well, but I figured you could do that if you wanted.
