GAMESPY CLOSES IN MAY 2014
« Reply #30 on: December 04, 2014, 05:00:06 pm »

Last week the nice fellow from iscandar.ch contacted us to discuss our (lack of) participation in that NWN server listing service.

I explained at that time, as I always do, that the servers themselves need no changes in order for any service to read data from the server. All NWN servers broadcast all the data needed to create  a list showing the name, description, players on, and max players (and more)... we have always refused to make changes to our hosts file, we have always refused to add nwnx or any other widget to the server since we know what NWN broadcasts without such extraneous add-ons.

Pascalbrax, the fellow from iscandar.ch quizzed us on what info we could share, and we shared, even code used to create our personal server monitor software. Within a couple days, that clever fellow pascalbrax had included the features we coded into the iscandar.ch service, such that now, the iscandar.ch site still takes feeds from skywingL's (host file modification required) system, but if a server does not give up the data on that basis, iscandar.ch now runs code based on our shared code and reveals all the needed info without any requirement that the server be modified in any way.

KUDOS to pascalbrax for offering this EXCELLENT service,  the BEST NWN listing service on the Internet.

We don't currently use the host file modification, but do use the nwnx_serverlist.dll plugin which works great for us. But for those of you who don't want to modify the host file, nor use nwnx, Ehye_Khandee if you would like to publically share your alternative, I would happily include it in the OP of the Stickeys I maintain here, and on the GOG.com nwn forums, and the NWN facebook group.

The solution we use, is change nothing on the server. The method of accessing the servers' data we will gladly share with any board posting NWN server info to the public. Our method does NOT require NWNX, nor does it require changes to the hosts file. The nwserver.exe program broadcasts freely all the info needed to populate a typical list of servers (with current player number and max player number, server name and more). We have been advocating this method since gamespy closed, and will continue to do so.

Anyone out there operating a NWN server list, just contact us at our forum ( http://aldohral.forumotion.com) and we can discuss the method.

P.S. The code Eriniel made to do this server monitoring was C code, and written for linux, so not something you can directly plug into your web site. Pascalbrax converted the C to code suited to the http://iscandar.chsite (PhP iirc). Neither Eriniel nor I are currently setup such that we can do PhP dev the way we would do it, nor do we have time to support the code, so we never offered it to the NWN community in general. If you (Laz) or another dev in the community would like to create some standardized PhP routine based on our C code, just ask, we'll talk.

Well I don't have the skills for such a project, I just thought I would extend an offer to include your system in the OP of the stickeys I maintain for server listings. Since it sounds like there isn't a prepackaged system for this, but rather you are offering to help others develop their own on an individual basis, I will just leave it to you to make such an offer (if you like) on the other stickeys which are located here:

http://www.gog.com/f..._server_l/page1

Just an FYI you needn't use NWNX or a host file change to add your server to Skywing's list.  I just added ArgentumRegio to skywing's list as a test via neverrun (hope that's OK) but the nwnlist.com site or Never Launcher could have added it just as well.

Been there done that - I've keyed in our IP into nwnlist.com a dozen times and never gotten the listing to stick. Are you with that site? Any idea why it never lasts?

No, I'm not with that site.  I made neverrun which uses (and can add to) Skywing's list.  The nwnlist.com website was kind of borked for some time at least regards to listing NWN1 servers, I assumed that it was all fixed now.  In any case, I see your server listed on all sites that use Skywing's server listing now.  IP address changes can/would cause a server without nwnx/host file changes to drop off the list tho. so it's not a permanent thing.

Thanks for adding us to the listing. We had the same IP for eight  years, only recently changed for tech reasons. We will likely have this IP for another eight years, lol.  *shrugs* perhaps those 'fixes' you mentioned made the difference, regardless, thanks for adding the server (I had long ago given up on it).

Yes, Skywing's master server replacement has an API to add a server directly to the list, without NWNX or hosts edit.

Hi, I'm yourserverlist.com owner (first was nwnserverlist.com, moved to yourserverlist.com), how i can add servers to Skywing service? I have more servers listed than Skywing and i want to add these servers to Skywind, we need a centraliced service with all servers and Skywind can be the pillar.

AlthorDeMalavir,

If you are interested in our code to reveal NWN servers, please contact us on our forum. We don't regularly visit this (or many other forums) at this time. We will share the lore with earnest developers (but we don't want to post our C code as we don't have time to support it and don't want to frustrate others unduly).

We check the above listed forum everyday - so you'll get a fairly prompt reply. I am GM_ODA (Membername) there.

Thanks, but i know how to request server information without gamespy protocol, i don't need GameSpy Enabled set to 1 in nwnplayer.ini, i found a solution to request server information in php code.

No clue what it would look like in PHP, but you can get the gist of how the API works in C++ here.  You're looking for the RegisterPendingServers part of Skywing's SOAP api.
