As GameSpy dropped support for NWN over a year ago, I doubt it will affect us much.

Why don't you programmers make a piece of software to replace it? You could tweak it exactly right because you love the game as much as I do. You could make it open-source, like the toolset library, and it could be potentially this common labour of love, like the library.

Yeah, I guess I am not sure how this has any direct impact on NWN players at all. GS ended support for NWN some time ago and we already have replacements or workarounds for that functionality. It seems like the main impact will be that new purchasers of the game may not know about the online functions or PWs, but that has been true for over a year and this is not any worse. If anything, the fact that we have gotten GoG to link to the server list page is an improvement from where we were right after GS dropped NWN.

Not that I wanted GS to go out of business or anything. But this is sort of like hearing that the management company that ended your apartment lease over a year ago has decided to get out of the apartment rental business altogether. Meh.

Tho they took their sweet time about it, it seems the deed may have been done.

Is anyone accessing the old chatspace today?

Again, Gamespy already dropped all Neverwinter Nights support years ago (its pretty common knowledge), not May of this year, so no, this is not news. Neverwinter by design will be playable as long as there is an Internet.

Other game players are getting seriously screwed bad though, as they are loosing ability to play expensive new titles they only very recently purchased...

If game companies are smart, they will release non-gamespy patches and host their own master servers...

I think ehye is talking about the chat space in game spy (which continued to function even after they abandoned server listing support for NWN.)

And nope, "try another nick."

Most of "modern" game companys or what they call themself are not smart. They think as an entity and not as a group of cool people who love to create games...

so i´m sure if there is just one little dollar that they would spent on supporting "their game" they drop it. Because a game is nothing more then a TV show that can suck so bad but people do watch them anyway so why care?... blah blah blah i like to say once a week how dumb, empty and overhyped most devs are today but cant even come up with something new and inspiring. Kill the clones, all of em!

Today im just glad that i never ever focused on working AT a game studio and stayed just a little passionate modder. So i can say f*** all these people! I mean how many "devs" (all designers included) do you see doing stuff in their freetime and talks about it? Most of them are like every other "ant" who is as good as an office clerk..thanks to the hardware from today...where you dont see how their work realy is... throwing 1000 objects in a scene, turn on full ambient occlusion shadow dynamics sun rays and yep...that is called art today most of the time...

I can write a book how bad a lot of stuff realy is and how easy it is to hold a mirror straight at their illusionay mindset...

If your interested check out an interview with the old crew of lucasart´s games and an interview with Ron Gilbert doing maniac mansion. These are real game designers to me. to bad they somehow like todays AAA crap i think....

Since I started getting a long delay and the "Try another nick" error yesterday after hitting the "join internet game" button, I have added the following to my \Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file

127.0.0.1   peerchat.gamespy.com    # To speed up the "Try another nick" delay when joining an NWN online game

It at least speeds things up.

Just to clarify:

1)  is the 'try another nick' happening to everyone?

2)  I had modified my system to look to skywing's list replacement, so was seeing a populated server list, but that seems to be dark now, as is chat, and those tabs are inaccessible.  What's the workaround?

3)  What seems to be the driving reason for this?  I thought we had a GS workaround but that seems to have been disrupted.

Thanks

I am getting the same results as BTB.  Long delay, "try another nickname," had Skywing's replacement but is now dark.  History is available but not the listing.

The chat service was a separate thing in GameSpy that is not now providing the same functionality (if any). Using the etc/hosts entry given above will at least save the long delay caused by the timeout of the no-longer-responding service.

Does that allow Skywing's replacement list?
