So, Am I Really Like This?
« on: March 29, 2014, 06:59:16 pm »

So Shadooow made this comment in another thread.  Not wanting to clutter up that thread and hoping to get more impressions from others (besides just Shadooow) I've made this thread.

Why every discussion with you MM turns into, "what I've said, what you've said, what I meant, what you meant, what word have you used, where you have been wrong" ?

What precisely do you mean by that?  And do others have this same impression?

You like to debate, question people on their opinions, and be right (sometimes at what appears to be at all costs), man.  There's nothing wrong with that, but it's the first thing any reasonable person would notice about you.  Some people will find it aggressive/combative.

You are creating a lots of pointless spam in a threads around there to be right for any cost. When someone says you are wrong about something, instead of accepting that you response with a "but i meant this actually" or "but you are wrong because youve said..." or completely ignoring that but instantly picking anything slightly incorrect and throwing it into that person's face.

In a general forum, well so be it, but you are doing the same even in a thread about builds, OCs or custom content where this is annoying because peoples are discussing something that matters and then you filling the valuable thread with spam.

BTW: did you really had to create a thread for this when this question is aimed on me personally? Why not use PM?

I wanted to see if others had that impression as well.  For example, in the "Options" thread everyone but you seemed to think my comments were on-topic and pertinent while you claimed they were spam.  You'll note pope_leo responded here already.

Did you have any specific threads in mind besides that custom conversation one that you could point to?  Could discuss whether that's pointless spam but at the moment it would seem more relevant to see if there are other threads you were thinking of.

Could you provide some examples of this?

I mean, something like this post seems to be the exact opposite -- I acknowledged my mistake and corrected my previous post.  Didn't claim I meant something else or that Whizard was wrong -- nor did I ignore the fact he pointed out a mistake I made.

What do you see as the difference between trying to be right and trying to find out the truth/best option?

And do you think a post like this one is out of style for me or would you view that as trying to be right?

Come on, take  this to private messages or something. You shouldn't be making an entire thread to call out a single person to argue with you. :/

I made this thread in response to Shadooow's post here as I didn't want to clutter up that thread.  If I was interested in just Shadooow's opinion I WOULD use PMs -- but I'm actually more interested in the opinions of others hence why I made this thread.  Edited original post to make that clear.

And one of the reasons I want other opinions besides Shadooow's is his post above -- note how he made specific claims and then when asked to provide examples refused to do so.

Since you asked, here's an opinion from a bystander who knows nearly nothing of you or anyone else in this thread:

This analysis is already tiresome, but it makes me want to watch my own behaviour to avoid doing things like this myself, so in that I think it has some use.

I don't even need to see any other examples.  This thread is enough.

You do have a tendency to never stop debating an issue, long after everyone else has gotten tired of it and would prefer to move on, and sometimes act as if you perceive a duty to correct anything anyone says that you find to be less than completely correct (it may often in fact be less than completely correct, but it is sometimes best at a certain point to just let things go). Both are tendencies that I imagine can get on people's nerves.

Hoping to give no offense here, but you are explicitly inviting frank criticism. I think I have demonstrated that I can debate you, and put up with any arguably annoying tendencies of yours, as well as anyone, and that I am happy to have you around.

None is taken.  Like you said, I am asking for precisely that.

Fair enough.  I suppose I generally figure most people on a video game forum LIKE to talk about this stuff endlessly and there's not the non-verbal cues you get in real life.  I'll try to tone it back some especially on nitpicking over a minor point.

...and that I am happy to have you around.

Appreciated.

Yeah.  In my case it's easier if someone can literally point to an example and say "Here's something that was annoying and here's why" -- hence why I am asking about that in this thread.

I do not think most people think in terms of points raised in conversation versus the over all feeling they get from it. So with that in mind you aren't going to get examples.

It's probably more useful just to realize that most people just want to be heard and then to move on. I think arguing makes them feel like their voice is invalidated. So it frustrates them.

Just give people a little more space to be wrong and it will be fine.

Interesting point and a concept that seems very alien to me.  I always want to know the correct answer or failing that the best answer -- whether that answer is mine, someone else's, something between, or something else entirely.  But I can see how others might feel the way you described.  Don't understand it but can picture it.
