Farewell to Ray
« on: May 08, 2013, 10:11:51 am »

There was a short announcement on the news last  night to the effect that Ray Harryhausen, the great stop-motion artist behind such films as "Jason and the Argonauts", "Valley of Gwangi", "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger" and "Beast from 20000 Fathoms" had died. So yet another inspirtational figure to many has passed away.

Just a few more pictures that illustrate Ray's work can be found in this album

I thought he passed away a while back?  Was sure I'd heard that months ago.  In any case the guy was tremendous and I absolutely loved his work, the old sinbad movies and such, bringing cyclops and skeletons to life.

@Beerfish check this out.  It's the obituary from yesterdays (london) Guardian newspaper. It has the creature list video from youtube embedded in it.

Oh i loved his animation work and he was truly an artist. The animations from clash of the titans are much better to look at from the original as the soulless moving things in todays movies. Not all stuff is not good but i just love his work!

Thanks Tarot, not sure why I assumed he had passed before and thanks for the list.

I heard about this like two day ago on IGN. OMG I remember watching sinbad, jason, clash of the titans and just connecting with it all. It was how I saw it in my head and one of main reasons I love D&D. Very dedicated man which is very rare these days and will always have fond memories of him and his work. Watch all 6 videos of his life on IGN link below.  'B)'

Ray Harryhausen was a master of his art, passionate about his work and the creatures that inspired him and more than deserving of the reputation he earned. His legacy is too vast to comment upon here, not only his work itself but the countless others he and his creations inspired...

Yet, he was also a very kind, patient, humble, friendly individual who never lost his sense of humour, his fascination for dinosaurs or his enthusiasm for life in general.

One of a kind. As much a legend as the mythological heroes and monsters his films so often evoked so well... and to me, a very special man indeed.
