as well as the chances of any money spent on NWN1 being invested back into the game or into making a worthy sequel

I don't see the relevance of this.  By that logic you could claim we shouldn't have to pay for a lot of things because neither of those two conditions will be met.  Bioware created the game, if we're not willing to pay for it then we shouldn't play it.  Regardless if the money is going to Bioware or GOG.

To clarify, I am not explicitly advocating piracy. I am merely saying that alternative sources of keys could be available on the internet, including but not limited to second hand keys.

So you're...implicitly advocating piracy?

I'm very disappointed.

I am not sure where you live in, but over here, most products come with some manner of ongoing support, whether in the form of software updates, physical warranties. Even services have some kind of feedback. They will not take your money and then refuse to fix problems like driver issues, OS compatibility issues or broken multiplayer.

So you're...implicitly advocating piracy?

I'm very disappointed.

That's up to your own interpretation. I am more disappointed you have accused me of that twice. I own a legitimate copy of both NWN1 Diamond and NWN2 Platinum, and they were worthwhile investments for their time.

However, I strongly urge anyone thinking of buying the game today: find a way to try before you buy, and make an educated decision about whether this game is worth the money.

Look at GOG's refund policy:

Refund Policy

You can cancel a preorder and receive a full refund if you request this before the preordered game's release. The refund request becomes invalid if you attempted to download the game, or its bonus content.

You can request a replacement game of equal or lower value (for games purchased during discounts, the discounted price applies) if the request is made within 7 days after purchase, and you have not attempted to download the game or its bonus content.

A sale is considered final after 7 days after purchase, or when you make a download attempt for a game or its bonus content.

And under GOG's warranty policy:

THE PRODUCTS OR SERVICES OFFERED ON THE SITE ARE PROVIDED OR LICENSED "AS IS" WITH NO WARRANTIES WHATSOEVER.

In other words, if you buy the game from GOG, download it, and find out it breaks or requires more effort to make it work than you are willing to put in, that money is forfeit. If you buy it expecting an active multiplayer community but find yourself looking at a ghost town, that money is also forfeit.

Depending on your system setup, reaching a fully functional installation of NWN may require a little to a lot of elbow grease, so I highly discourage blindly jumping into a purchase. Don't worry about supporting the developer/publisher/retailer/whoever. They have an obligation to give consumers a working product. If they cannot give consumers a working product, consumers have a right to not buy it.

That was not a threat, Aelis. It was a warning. And just FYI the money goes to Atari. That doesn't matter, though. What matters is that you pay for what you use. Not doing so is piracy and it doesn't much matter where you are.

As for GoG's TOS, GoG is a retro gaming site. Retro gamers are quite accustomed to tweaking old games to make them run on new systems. I would honestly discuss your concerns about compatibility at greater length, but like I said earlier... this is just not the board to do that in. Just have a little faith that retro gamers know how to handle it.

You were accused of ADVOCATING PIRACY and that is exactly what you are doing. Do not confuse it with an accusation of actual personal piracy. The game is not 'abandonware' and there is no legal status for such a term in any case.

You have a very similar line in the EULA for buying the CD or DVD version - this is nothing unusual in ANY GAME SALE, so what's your point?

gog.com DOES give the purchaser USABLE WORKING product. You act like they don't and you are totally wrong here. Installing NWN is almost as easy as falling off a log, and there are still LOTS of us here in this forum and elsewhere who will help if asked. The NWN community is strong, not what it was in the hayday but strong just the same. There are hundreds of servers to choose from, and new content form the community all the time.

NWN is an excellent game that continues to evolve and attract new and old users alike.

Be well. Game on.

TBH I''m bemused by this whole discussion.  NWN (all expansions) is _dirt cheap_ (£3-4 on Amazon over here). Which makes it about the same price as a sandwich.

The main reason to get this game IS the toolset, as far as I'm concerned, and I don't know who in their right minds would want to start any serious build project with a pirated copy. As I said - mindboggling.

I'd just like to add that -

1)  I'm using NWN for my current projects with the hope of attracting NWN newbies to it precisely because it's so cheap to get now.

2) With some creative thinking there might still be ways of making the game further commercially exploitable, but this is a detailed discussion I will take to a different part of these forums once it's taken proper shape in my head.

To quote wikipedia "A Digital Distributor specialized in bringing old games out of abandonware is GOG.com". Therefore as nwn is available for purchase from GOG, it is NOT abandonware.

My own definition of abandonware is software for which both the original publisher and the original creator as well as any third party that may have purchased the rights to said software, is no longer contactable or chooses not to allow themselves to be contacted.

Again NwN does not fit. I therefore assert that NwN is NOT abandonware and further, I find any suggestion that it is, to be bordering on the offensive.
