Build questions
« on: March 01, 2013, 06:27:24 pm »

I've noticed there are a ton of sites with databases of builds created to min/max with the optimal spread of classes. Is the game hard enough that these are necessary, or would I be fine just playing blind and picking whatever as I go?

The problem is these builds seem to NEVER have conversation skills...

Another question... I want to play a 'traditional sorcerer'. Any tips on making this character?

Thanks.

If you're going to play the official campaign I'd say pick whatever, not really a big deal.
After,  when you move on to PW's then yes (to a certain extent)  to min/maxing, depending on the PW and the environment/play style/PW category.

Never played a sorcerer.

IMO
  • Keep your Charisma maxed out.
  • Good Constitution (more HP) and Intelligence (More skill points) is helpful as well.
  • Avoid combat related feats that don't improve your AC or spellcasting
  • Toughness is a good feat to have
Sorcerors are excellant spellcasters because they essentially work off a points system. However, it is way too easy to get caught without the proper spread of spells. Just because you can cast 5 fireballs doesn't mean you want to. When choosing what spells you know be certain to spread the love around.

Yes.  That's precisiely how it works.  A build that has been optimized for combat is exactly that and pays no tribute to RP skills.  Beside that, the Level 40 builds are typically optimized for combat effectiveness AT Level 40 and may be intentionally gimped until the final few levels, especially for a skill dump class.

So, if you prefer a toon that excels in the RP skills, like convos, merchandising, intimidation, etc. , no, you won't find any compilation sites that specialize in those except the few oddballs that may have been posted.  You'll need to decide that yourself.

My advice is to start with one of those optimized "power" builds and begin to dilute it to more accurately perform how you would like it to.  Though a CHA-based character can add their primary ability modifier to the CHA-based skills there's still nothing like a few levels of rogue for maximizing all the class skills, including UMD which can drastically change the potential and flexibilty of just about any build.  That happens to be CHA-based skill, btw.  I'd say bard is probably the next most skilled class with access also to spellcraft and discipline instead of traps.

So the bottom line is, when it come to designing an RP toon, the player themselves are the best judge as to what is most important and what is less significant.  I suggest going through all the feats and deciding which ones will benefit your PC the most and then make sure you can meet the prereqs before creating.  Even race has some impact on RP.

As for difficulty, it depends on the content.  Most challenge combat effectiveness because that's the prevailing popularity, I suppose.  Fewer RP servers than Action ones, I expect.  So you'll need to adjust that combat/RP balance to suit the environment and refinement only comes from experience.

Thank you for the helpful replies. I just intended to play through the campaigns with a friend as a co-op game. I didn't realize there were people who played this game competitively and those maximized builds were meant for that... I thought the campaign was just supposed to be hard '-_-'

Well, for people like me, the campaign was hard enough that I never completed it. I prefer to make my own characters, and not copy other people's powerful builds. I much prefer to make a build that is different, and more fun to play. Something like a halfling bard with a pair of daggers. Not a great build, but very fun to play with a few friends.

What I am saying, is that you should play the game the way you find the most enjoyable. Try the other builds if you wish, but I think you would have more fun trying your own. Experiment a little with different builds until you find something that you like. The game has many different play styles, and there is something for everyone. That is what makes NWN such a great game. If it has an older woman like me playing it, then it must be good, lol.

Enjoy your time playing the game, pkmn, and welcome to the NWN community. When you are done with the campaign, try a few PWs. There are a lot of great one out there, and yes, there are some that use the conversation skills. I'm sure there is a PW for every type of play style, so do not feel that you need to create a powerful character. Remember that the key is to play the game in whichever way is the most fun for you and your friends.

No, the official campaigns are pretty easy.

If you want difficult content, you need custom campaigns or persistent worlds.
