A NWN Machinima: The Dark Tide
« on: October 20, 2012, 05:44:02 am »

Here is the second episode in the Dark Tide machinima series using the NWN game engine:
youtu.be/b6s2BFUIHAI

The crew (Alred, Herald, Snafe and Ensign) have finished their assignment (found in episode 1 youtu.be/8dzt0qRhXCQ) and have returned to the White Feather tavern in Goldenstep to await further instruction from Dimi Nished, the leader of the Dark Tide when something happens...

------

As a series, the Dark Tide strives to utilize (and show off) the community content that is available.  A lot of the conent does not interact well with other content, so some sacrifieces had to be made... but rest assured, the best and largest amount of content that could be used WAS used.  The NWN Community is amazing, and it deserves to be in the visual spotlight.

Previous Episodes:
Episode One:  youtu.be/8dzt0qRhXCQ
The Prologue:  youtu.be/pH6yW_Wupbw

Despite the promise of this statement, and a promise made a year ago, you haven't made the effort to credit the creators of the content you are using. If you aren't going to go through with crediting artists, please refrain from claims of "showing off" community content. The artists of this community deserve a spotlight as you point out, but you have not given them one.

At least some credits for Lordofworms "seasonal forest" and "interiors" would be appropriate because thats the environement your machinima is captured in. Comes of a bit hmm to show the names of your Team but none of the guys who made it possible in the first place ya know;)

So, having done Neverending Nights, and used some CEP type content - and some other content, that I tried (like Snafe, some worked, some didn't) - there was no way I could probably accurately say whose content was or wasn't in my own series.

The thing is when you're mixing and mashing what content does and doesn't work (some doesn't play well with others) - it begins to RAPIDLY become difficult to tell whose NWN Content made it into the game and which ones didn't. And sure, he's not giving credit (just like I didn't in my series) to those who may have made whatever pieces made it into the game - but he IS showing it off (which is what he said he'd do). I think Snafe's main thing - other than telling a fun story - is to show off that NWN, despite its age, still has some amazing content (and typically) an amazing and supportive community as well that continues to develop for this 10+ year old (I believe, now?) game.

He could easily use a more "beautiful" game like NWN2, or Halo 3, or Borderlands 2, or whatever crazy new game is out right now. And if he did, he would probably get more hits and more search results out of it - because, let's be honest, not most people care to look up anything that has to do with an older game like Neverwinter Nights.

But no - instead he looked at all the community content - said, "This game, despite it's age, still kicks rocks! I want to tell my story using this game - and the content this amazing community continues to make - and show it all off - that this game, despite its age - still stands well against newer games!"

And as an FYI, for those who seek to slam and judge - if you go to his website, right on the side:

http://www.darktide.co/

"A Special Thanks to the NWVault and all of the custom content available there. The Dark Tide would not be possible without the help of the Neverwinter Nights Community."

With a link to NWVault.

I dont believe anyone saying that he dont know the author of "seasonal forest". Thats just nonsense and ignorant, sorry but thats about your credibility then. And henesua and I wasnt slamming him...maybe you read a different post? Bleh about the other stuff you said:D

No one has slammed the work itself so just put that nonsense back where you pulled it from.

Its great that projects like this are being put forward BUT this project in particular claims to showcase and highlight the community. It doesn't. A link and thanks to the NWVault is meaningless. That is a server which stores content.

Claims of giving credit are nothing more than a pretense of goodwill. It rings false because it is not hard (I've done it retroactively for a PW made in 2003) to create a list of what content was used. To not do this simply means that you couldn't be bothered. And if you can't be bothered you obviously don't care.

Again thats fine. Its the claiming that you do, that bothers me.

Pretty cool. Anything that brings awareness of folks to what our beloved old game can look like is a good thing, in my opinion. Sure, make an effort to document what stuff you use, and credit. Some people do appreciate the credit.

If it will make everyone happy, I can go ahead and make a credit page on the website which I can go ahead and put the link in the credits (Something I had planned to do, but hadn't gotten around to it).... My biggest promise I made, I will continue to stick to:  I want to show off the NWN Community.

As for my one year absence, which none of you asked about but most are probably wondering about, a series of events were put into motion that prevented this series from continuing.  Among those things are my own wedding, college graduation, search for a Masters program, and moving across the continent to begin graduate study at a new university.  Now that I have more time (not a lot, but more) I want to release on a bi-weekly basis.

Glad to see others enjoying the series! Knowing Travis he has some awesome in store! (I personally think the Pirate guy steals the show... but I just might be biased). '<img'>

I took some of your advice and finished up the credits page on the website.  From now on, this webpage will be in the credits.  It is in the main navigation links on top of the website since it is an important aspect of the series.  Check it out:

Thanks. That goes a long way towards generating good will, and living up to the claims you made earlier about showcasing the community. Its well put together too. Thanks a lot for that.
By the way, I also really like that rogue/assassin pack that Helling made. Good taste there! I set it up to work on all races, and moved the clothing to index 120 for compatibility with project Q. You are ofcourse welcome to use it, if you want it. And no, I do not require credit at all since this is not my work.

That really helps out a lot.  You saved me a lot of sweating over this specific armor set.  It is a really nice looking set and I want so much to use it.

Also, check out the updated credits page:  www.darktide.co/credits.htm

I appreciate the credit, but it is a bit embarassing. The art is not mine. Running the package through NWN armoury and changing the numbering of the pieces is a fairly simple process. The trick is to understand what to change in the file (the MDL files are essentially text files) and how to automate text changes. Regular Expressions and batch processing are your friend.
