Through my contact at GOG.com, I learned about the following promotion and agreed to post about it.  They're stepping up and supporting NWN and their entire line of D&D games which will help support and grow our community.  GOG.com has been a fantastic partner with NWN, as they supplied the prizes to us for our community's 10th anniversary celebration.

What's more, I'm drafting a short (500 words) article about the benefits of online play and links to our community resources.  They'll post in addition to other articles that they've created about D&D.  As far as I know, this is the only community-submitted article that they've asked anyone for, so that's a big deal (when they tweeted about our 10th year celebration, it went out to their entire 30,000 followers).

From GOG.com:

"Starting today, GOG.com is running a promomotion with Hasbro / Dungeons & Dragons games, including:

  • Neverwinter Nights Diamond
  • Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
  • Planescape: Torment
  • Icewind Dale 1&2
  • Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone
  • D&D: Dragonshard
  • Temple of Elemental Evil
These games will be available up to 65% off--that means $3.49 for Baldur's Gate 2 or Icewind Dale.
It will be a stacking promo, meaning, you will receive a 30% discount when buying one game, 33% for two, and finally, up to 65% off when buying all 9 games. If you already own some of the games on GOG.com, these will be added to your stacking discount: if you own 5 games, and want to buy the other 4, you qualify for the biggest discount.

If you don't own any of those fantastic RPGs and want to buy the complete collection it's only $31.41--that's nine of the greatest for half the price of a new PC game.

Along this, we're going to publish some articles about D&D games on GOG.com--including NWN on Wednesday.
I wanted to know if you would like to write something about NWN--how and where can you play multiplayer, why it  is so great, etc. We would include links to community websites and any relevant info."

So, how can we help?
1)  Buy any titles you don't already have.  Let's demonstrate the power of the NWN community.  If they see a bump in sales beyond what they would expect from a promotion, then they'll be more likely to support us more in the future.
2)  Get the word out!  Publish this sale on your website, tweet about it.  Facebook it.  Activate your own personal network.  This helps NWN, which helps our community.
3)  Help me write the article.  What topics are most important to why a player should play NWN online and the value of doing so?  I'm thinking of the following topics:

  • It's easy
  • Thousands of people playing - every day.
  • Hundreds of online worlds
  • Different play styles:  roleplay, action, story, social, etc...
  • Free to play
  • Free to create and host your own
  • Downloadble content/modules (alright, not exactly about online, but clearly a selliing point)
  • Links to a few resources (nwvault, nwn.info, possibly NWConnections)
  • WHAT ELSE??
I hope you guys get as excited as I am.  While the promotion won't last forever, the articles may.

Thanks!

               Sweet!

I'll be stocking up on a couple more copies of NWN (as usual).

Be well. Game on.

Just FYI, getting multiple CD keys from GoG requires you to be a bit crafty. They can only send you one cd key per account.

The trick to getting multiple CD keys is to GIFT them to yourself using alternate email addresses. '<img'>

BelowTheBelt, that's positive news. In your short article, it may be worth emphasizing that the NWN multiplayer formats are really free-to-play. I think so many people have seen that term used to describe MMO environments where one needs to pay to level or to get gear or to get access to the best content. It's worth distinguishing NWN from those systems.

There have been mixed results. As a rule if the hardware/OS supports the CD/DVD version of NWN it will also support the GoG version. Most conflicts can be compensated for by rolling back drvers or Direct X, changing graphics settings or disabling the videos.

Below is the submitted article sent to GOG.com at their request for inclusion on their site about NWN multiplayer. They may edit or ask for revisions:

DANGER: Neverwinter Nights just might be the last RPG you buy!

Wha- wha- what??

That’s right. Neverwinter Nights just might be the last RPG you buy. But, you say, how can that be? Quite simply, because in addition to more than 100 hours of exciting adventure that ships in the original Neverwinter Nights Diamond campaigns, there is a lifetime of adventure that awaits you online. Enough to satisfy even the most discriminating RPG player.

You see, one of the most exciting and enduring aspects of Neverwinter Nights is its multiplayer capability. Shipped with the game are a toolset and a special application that enable players to craft their own adventures and host those games for others to play via LAN or internet connection. Due to these powerful adventure-crafting tools, hundreds and hundreds of online worlds have sprouted up and are frequented every day by thousands of players– even as the game celebrates over 10 years of play.

Playing online is easy. Just click the “Multiplayer” option when the title screen appears after you launch Neverwinter Nights. This will launch the Gamespy client (that ships with the game) and after creating a username and password, you’ll be connected online and can view or join any one of the worlds. Create a character on that world and jump into the action. It’s that simple.

These worlds run the gamut of play styles such as roleplay (where you can let your inner elf come to the fore), hack’n slash action, arena combat, social, or story-based. Most blend a bit of everything. They may be based on the worlds of popular fiction or be of the designer’s creation. They may be set in the world of fantasy, the modern world, or even science fiction. Try a few, try them all. You’re sure to find more than a few that fit your interests and excite your imagination.

The best part is that access to this unlimited online adventure is free. With your purchase of NWN, you gain access to play all these without ever having to pay again. Unlike those “free to play” MMO games where it is free up to a certain level or where success can only be achieved through plunking down additional cash for gems to buy the best equipment, Neverwinter Nights online play is wholly and entirely free. Forever.

If that wasn’t enough, you could download any of the thousands of free community-created adventures from www.nwvault.com (many of these are regarded as being as good as or better than the original campaigns). You can also expand your game with new spells, feats, skills, races, classes, or treasure. At the risk of beating a dead orc, this content is also free.

The prolific community-driven effort to create adventures and expand the look and feel of the game has led to a large and passionate following for the game that has succeeded in making Neverwinter Nights stand tall, even when compared to the RPG games of today.

So, where should your Neverwinter Nights adventure begin? www.neverwinternights.info is a good place to understand the depth of the game. Get online and find out why Neverwinter Nights just might be the last RPG you buy. Ever.

That's very well written.  I think, though, that you could say that there are *thousands* of free community-created adventures, rather than hundreds.

               Point taken.

If you look on the module archives in the Vault, assuming 25 posts per page and 231 full pages, thats between 5,700-5,800 modules.  That certainly qualifies for *thousands*, even if you factor out all the ones that are tests, personal 'leveler' mods, examples, etc...  Also, there are probably a fair bit that won't work in 1.69, but all in all, still likely to be thousands.

I updated the article.

The article has been posted on GoG.com. There are some quotes from GOG insiders about the game and the article follows below. Additionally, they tweeted (to their 30,000 followers) about the promotion and highlighting the page.

They've been tweeting about the D&D promotion pretty regularly since it started, since there are so many games included in the promotion. About 3 days ago they highlighted NWN.

Good news for NWN!
