Spell Stacking
« on: June 15, 2012, 07:09:28 pm »

Here's a question I have always had and I wager the answer is an obvious one because those are historically the ones that I recognize least::::
- - - - - - - - - - -
Is there some sort of algorithm, relationship or list about which spells (or spell types) stack with other spells to affect a single target?  (I'm intentionally disregarding multiple targets because the dynamic SHOULD be the same, no?)
- - - - - - - - - - -
For example, if my cleric casts a duration spell like SoV, it can cast Magic Missile (per domain), Firestorm or other direct damage "instant" spells and those damages will overlap with the SoV electrical damage & stun effect.

But what about other offensive duration spells?  Could a few different Bigby's be cast on the same target with all the effects stacked?  What about multiple castings of the same duration spell, like 2 or 3 SoVs in the same area?

I can't recall trying anything like this and haven't tried testing it due to the potentially exponential number of permutations that would need to be examined to draw any concrete conclusions.

I have stacked BUFFS before like those that provide DR and those will stack, not in the amount of DR per attack but when one DR collapses, the other begins to apply (though I can't recall if the sequence of application effects the overall results).

Haven't read anything about this on the NWNwiki or elsewhere, but that doesn't mean it's not there. If you have a link to an applicable article handy, that may be suffient to answer the question.

As usual,
TIA

In vanilla NWN, all AOEs stack. Not only cloud-like AOEs like acid fog or SOV, also mobile circle AOEs like silence/battletide/dirge.

Each bigby hand, same as acid arrow or inferno does not stack on same target and if target currently have this effect, new effect is completely blocked even initial damage.

I have changed this behavior in my community patch a bit:
- initial damage from spells like acid arrow/combust is allowed
- spells like acid arrow doesnt stack yet they still increase duration of the delayed effect

DR spells probably do not stack with itsel - im not sure its in my todo list to proof it, but they stack with others, so you can cast a premonition, greater stoneskin and stoneskin and they will be all used.
