At best it's a distraction.  From what I understand it has some amount of replay value but not months worth.  People have already beat it multiple times.

Aye, don't dispair Guile, this happens every time a new popular game is released. Most recently with skyrim, but it has been like that as long as I can remember. There are reasons why NWN1 has persisted all these years. All that link shows is people are hungry for this type of game (*waves @ the mythical creature that is NWN3*, like the lochness many rumors swirl, but no real evidence of it's existance* *nudge, Bioware, nudge*)

I also feel there is little to despair regarding D3's release.  It's a separate audience.  One is D&D and the other is an item search with emphasis on dueling.  Mostly kids and those adults which desire a taste of a new flavor of ice cream... like broccoli pecan. *ackkk*   D3 is still just a single campaign with new bells, whistles and classes running around in high-tech graphic renderings.  Woohoo!   Been there, done that.  I'll pass.

The "true death" of NWN will be dictated by the existing community rather than a new market.  NWN's popularity is merely undergoing a natural degradation (actually, NWN's persistence would be more accurately described as supernatural, but you get the idea).

I agree. NWN's decline has more to do with us than it does with other games. The difficulty is in drawing in new players to mitigate attrition. Our ability to regenerate has declined.

Losing the likes of PStemarie I think was a bigger problem than the release of D3.

Guile, Do you ever get tired of preaching doom and gloom.  It seems like every 6 months or so you come out with a new NWN death post.  It is almost as if you want the game to die.

Sorry we are still here and plan to be for years to come.

Of course, I'm not really talking about anything worth mentioning, hell I don't even think Neverwinter will be worth looking at.  Indeed, after watching the click style gameplay on the preview, I wasn't even a bit impressed...  (Besides it's only 3 classes, what a major error they made there!)

For those that do not know it, people love variety, and most importantly OPTIONS....

Now, as far as the above posters, yeah, nwn die?  I was joking, of course...

Our community isn't dead, definitely in regress, but dead, no...

We will indeed survive for more years to come, unless of course someone picks up the ball and delivers what us true RPGers love...

And simplicity is definitely NOT it...

When one of those game makers can get that right, they will be back on track again...

The last crushing blow NWN took was NWN2, which peeled a lot of the most accomplished content creators away, and caused many regular players and builders to hang it up and walk away. I am just a mediocre joe, but I was one that tried NWN2, was tragically disappointed, and walked away from it and NWN in frustration and annoyance.

IMO, the only thing that stands a chance at dealing another crushing blow to NWN is Neverwinter, which is barely a blip on the radar, and they have yet to release any significant  details about the  toolset, except it has a cool name.
It sounds like Atari finally realized that the developers screwed up NWN2 by tailoring the toolset for the professional modders, and not the community that is still producing excellent content for a 10+ year old game. If they do a good job of making a usable tool for everybody, then NWN may be in trouble, but if they make another 'need a degree in game design, programming, or a mountain of patience' toolset, it will just bark the shins of the NWN community, and life goes on.

I think the closing of the old web page with forums really hurt the player base.

I cant believe they did not backup their website...unreal.

Oy, _another_ prediction of her demise?  Enough with the hysteria already.

NWN is still here after ten years, come back in ten and I'll tell ya again. '<img'>

Neverwinter Online is fundamentally an MMO and I'd be really surprised if their so-called toolset has the flexibility of Second Life.  You certainly won't have the freedom to create things of a mature nature due to Hasbro's biases (Cartoon Evil or get the heck out).  So no, nothing with Hasbro's fingers in it has any chance of impacting the NWN community.

NWN serves a particular niche that no centrally controlled MMO nor fixed campaign setting game can.  There's a need for an engine and toolset (or toolchain) that allows non-experts to create but also one that doesn't get in the way when used by an expert.  NWN2 failed at both of those.

The product that will have the biggest impact on NWN will be the one that serves those needs without lock-in or tied to any sort of mothership.

I predict that 10 years from now there will have been hundreds of NWN is dead threads, yet there will still be a Community to respond to them.
