Worst enemy?
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:33:14 pm »

I was curious about which was the creature that most worries you when you face it and why. I personally hate Red Slaads. They almost seem enhanced trolls but they can stun you, get you diseased and can regenerate, moreover they conjure another slaad and trouble suddendly doubles.

It depends on a lot of factors, such as SP/MP, what your class mix is, what level you are, what sort of magic is available in the environment you are in, etc.

For example, if you are playing a roguish character, you may cringe at the thought of dealing with undead, since they are immune from sneaks and many have mental attacks with will saves, which is often a weak point for rogues. But, at higher levels, you may have Slippery Mind and be less affected by those attacks and may have other ways of dealing damage to creatures immune to critical hits. Similarly, if you play in a relatively high magic environment or have a high UMD skill, you can find magic items and scrolls to protect yourself and also deal damage to those who might otherwise be immune.

BTW, I agree that the slaadi can be tough. The summons automatically make them tougher than the game gives them credit for and the fact that they are chaotic neutral means that some common protections (e.g. Protection from Alignment) won't help against their mind attacks.

               Henchies in the OC.

Very beside Sharwyn, of curse. But that one...
But I love fighting undeads. Those make me feel I'm doing good even when killing, by putting them to rest.
I know of a fun "Undeads" module, Return to Ravenloft, but I'm more than willing to listen to anyone's suggestion.

I personally fear Beholders and Mind Flayers, especially with improved AI, or ran by a DM with the special abilities active.

Nothing puts the brakes on a MM like a Beholder...bleh.  And that special ability of the Mind Flayer, when active in the scripting, is really nasty!

You are referring to the beholder antimagic cone and the psionic mass concussion.

While I agree that the antimagic cone itself is a reason to go sorcerer rather than wizard, the mass concussion is fairly weak against the MM as the knockdown and wisdom loss is blocked by mind blank and the damage does not bypass damage reduction (making a good use for premonition and its ilk).

Right about the Beholder - especially when it is a Paragon example!

No, I am referring to the Remove Brain ability...bleh.

Oh, and I really hate the Lag Monster.

Unbeatable, that thing.

Extract brain is not used by AI on those without mind-affecting ailments (paralyze, stun, and daze).  So a MM is easily immune.  There is a bug that allows it also to be performed on creatures with spell failure, so if you combine beholders and mindflayers you could have a deadly mix.  Also, extract brain allows for an attack of opportunity, so it does have some downsides.

Compare extract brain to shadow attack.  The two are not considerably disimilar in their effects, and I warrant shadow attack may be slightly more powerful given its glitches (like letting the caster remain invisible, because the spell was never signaled as hostile).  And you can use shadow attack yourself against monsters, simply summon an SD shadow fiend, cast invisibility on it, and let it go up to monsters and take them out without them fighting back.

As I mentioned, when properly scripted, or under DM control...

Demilich... the default one at least... rather than the nerfed one without harm-self, except against a trapper with holy traps in inventory, then beholder mobs.

Nah, the Demilich is a pushover.
