I haven't played the game and am only giving my uninformed opinion here, but maybe there should be a connection, at least in the planning. And maybe there was, but it seems more likely that they would rather see what makes WoW successful than what makes people like their own MMOs.
Trying to attain the success that WoW has is not bad in itself, but in order to do that, it needs to fill a niche that WoW isn't already filling and I would think that at least to do that is to see what makes people like NwN online play (being that there is such a dedicated community). If even one well-liked element from NwN could be improved upon, who says it can't create success? Gamers that are used to/like/prefer newer games could experience things they haven't before (or haven't before well) in a somewhat more user friendly and prettier atmosphere, and gamers that are used to/like/prefer older games would find the things they like in a prettily wrapped package and have even more gaming goodness to enjoy.
Stuffing MMO gameplay into a little box where everyone is the hero of the universe as they like to do only creates the feeling of playing an extremely tedious single player game where apparently the heroes of the universe aren't very efficient because there are a million carbon copies of them and meaningful multiplayer interaction is limited to benefiting oneself by gaining more experience rather than making it more fun and varied in general.
