Paizo Licenses Pathfinder MMO Rights
« Reply #15 on: November 24, 2011, 01:43:00 pm »

I am with Lord Sullivan on this one.

Lost me with MMO.

And that is a damn shame, because I really like Pathfinder.  I just absolutely detest MMOs.

I would much more prefer a Pathfinder game ala NWN style.  Player, DM, Server clients, with a nice toolset.  Then Paizio can make their own PW, ala MMO if they wish, and let others make theirs as they see fit!

Groovy, man!

It is really too bad too many gaming companies nowadays are going for the short-term profits, instead of building a name slowly first, much like Bioware did (before EA).

IMHO, that is where some of the best games have come from - BG and NWN being fine examples of this.

You build a loyal following, treat them well, then somewhere down the line, sell out and cash in big time!

Yup, word.

I expect they removed mode "D&D" like parts, since though the rulesets can't be copyrighted, the descriptions of those rules can be.  If there's even a single sentence in the game or any rules that come with it that are derived from the WotC owned core books, or if they use a single creature with a unique name or appearance that WotC owns the copyright for, then in order to be released it would have to be licensed by them.

I'll throw in the obligatory IANAL, but I did look into this a fair bit recently, and it looks like anything derived from the D&D systems is a lawsuit waiting to happen the moment it changes from print to any other medium unless Hasbro/WotC sign off on it.

Read their FAQ.  The game mechanics are going to be quite different than the Pathfinder mechanics.  Sounds like the only thing it's going to share with PnP is going to be the setting.  The biggest giggle I got from all of that is that a Marketing guy is now their Chief Technical Officer.

*blink* *blink-blink* Ya, good luck wit that.

               Webshaman,
Oh...ok....my bad.

It is not important why I asked.

Anyway...what I wanted to say as I've been playing NWN from an MMO like perspective it is very frustrating that the game doesn't get any further in this.

I believe anyone ever tried to build their own PW has become frustrated with the difficulty to make it persistent and to add things to it....

Almost everything in the NWN toolset seems either geared towards making SP modules or at most multiplayer games where you save as you go....not really open 24/7 worlds....

               I am somewhat appalled!

I have been one of the biggest Online fans and pushers of PW play from almost the gitgo!

*grumbles to self* Must be slipping in my old age, the young whippersnappers think I am an old SP player...

I have hosted my own PW (The Playground, which was HoF, I believe, and one of the first PWs to use the PRC and CEP together - I even wrote the Dummies Guide to installing the PRC for PW use, as back then it was hellish to install and use), I have hosted several others (Silver Marshes, etc) and I have been on the Staff of yet again several others.  Due to time constraints (job, family) I have laid down my Staffing duties - just could not do them justice.

But I remain a stalwart online advocate of NWN.

HOWEVER, I detest, hate, and get the urge to vomit when one mentions MMO and NWN together.  They are NOT THE SAME!!!!

And never should be.

MMOs do not have DM Clients, not like that of NWN.  This is a crucial difference, IMHO.  The added human element of someone who is not playing a character puts NWN in a massively different catagory as a MMO.  This is someone who can literally create any and all stories DYNAMICALLY in response to what the Players are doing, AND can slip into the enemy at any time - which makes for a wildly different game!

Where in MMOs most encounters are just bazillion hps and impossible ACs (and immunities, and needing certain items to defeat, yadda yadda yadda), to keep things interesting against the marauding hordes of Player Clans, in NWN PW play with a DM (or more, dependingly), one doesn't need to do this.  The villians, NPCs, etc, come alive, and react explicitly to what the Players do (or don't do, as the case may be).

Here we enter into the *gasp* realm of STORY ROLEPLAY!!!  Yeah, where one can literally interact with the "world" and it...has...meaning!

So totally different genre.  Yup.

Don't get me started *plugs ears*  I am not listening....lalalalalala...

               No thanks.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Pathfinder fan, but I have no intention of wasting my time on an MMO. I'm a builder DM. This game has nothing to offer a player like me.

IMHO comparing an MMO to NWN is like comparing a cheap hot dog to a perfectly cooked, bacon wrapped filet mingon.
