NwN Server and security update
« Reply #90 on: January 05, 2012, 12:09:59 am »

I see no reason to respond to someone trolling for controversy when there is absolutely no risk to personal security information by logging into a NWN game server.  But as a server host/admin, I'll post anyway so those newer to the game are not fooled into thinking there's anything wrong with playing this great game online.

You can safely play on any NWN server you desire.  The lack of a running master server for player authenticaion will not prevent you from playing, and it will not expose you to risk of loss of personal information.  At least one server-side security system has been generously provided to the community at large for many months now.  Any server admin should be able to easily adapt the code to any PW (or make up their own system), which means that after you log in with your character and get your CD key(s) saved in the server's database, nobody else will be able to steal your character or your character's stuff.

So, enjoy this game for all it's worth.  The best entertainment value (thousands of hours) you can get for a single $9.99. '<img'>

The simple fact is that it may be fixed tomorow, or it may never be fixed. To me it really does not matter one way or the other.

The reason it does not matter to me, I will not even state here. Simply because the reason does not need to be spread to general knowladge any faster then it is already spreading. Just like the things you are complaining about do not really need to be spread, unless it is to people who are running servers. That way they can take the mesures needed to secure them.

The only thing you are doing here is advertising to the really board people on the forums just what they can do to have a little fun. You are not getting anything solved. You are not even asking for any kind of help, that anyone here can give you. Bioware rearly checks on the boards here. You would have better luck just waiting for the MS to get fixed, then griping about it here. If you want to file a complaint here is the Support  link for the game.

Good luck.

I guess so '<img'>

To the others:
In regards to oldschool, i own NWN1 since about 8 years.

It is amazing how some people think that security only has to do something with personal information.
If i can log in with your character and mess arround with it, then this is a lack of security as well.

Yes, a server stores the cd-key and links it with your account-name.
But i seriously miss the old days where i could simply log in from different computers with different IPs and different CD-KEYS with the same account.

Also, the guy a bit more above who thinks i'm trolling, you are so wrong you won't believe it.

If people were paying monthly fees for on-line play, the MSA would be essential, but we aren't forking out $15/month (if we were, the revenue stream would be there to have fixed this a few days after it went down).

A MSA is no kind of "marketing tool" for a 10 year old game that sells for $5 on-line if you time your purchase right, or $10 if you don't.

Do you work with bioware or atari?

Since when has Atari done anything that was good for them? Bio's hands are tied. There is only so much they can do, and there is only a little bit of time they are willing to spend on it. That is understandable because they have moved on to more money making games. I thank Bio for the time and effort. I thank the community, especially Funky, for making the work around fixes for the issue we are talking about. The Idea that we should stop playing NWN, until they fix this is silly. Please continue to breathe, your brain needs the O2. Yelling about fixing this is also silly, We have had a Bio employee tell us they are working on it, that they will eventually fix it, that they have not forgotten us, or their game. Trust them, or leave. I choose to trust, as they have yet, after 7 different games now, never let me down yet.

The Master Server has been offline for over six months.  Running around flapping your arms screaming "The sky is falling" now is ludicrous.  If you need somebody to rail against then the appropriate target is Atari (if they still exist), not Bioware and certainly not EA.

Those servers that depended on the old Master Server have either shut down or found alternative solutions.  It was always a single point of failure that would knock us offline, often over a long weekend, until somebody noticed it was down and brought it back.  Even if it were to come back I doubt any of the existing server operators would care to depend on it again.  I know we won't.

The information to emulate the Master Server is out there.  Feel free to write and operate your own replacement.

Hmm... I must have missed the bit where we all agreed to pull out our yard sticks and scales to see how our ejohnsons measure up against one another.

That said, I doubt if there are many still around in this Community that have been involved with NWN in one way or another longer than I have, but that really doesn't mean (nor count for...) anything.

MSA is down and has been down.  It will either come back at some point or it won't.  Either play on-line and enjoy yourself, or don't.  Only you can decide that for yourself.  Only you will be impacted by your decision, regardless of what it is.

And yeah, it does seem strange that "two" of you register new accounts on the same day and have as your first forrays into the forum, decide to moan/cry/discombobulate over the same issue (and nothing else).

Why are you all hysterical? I'm very calm as you can see in my previous post even though someone was already trying to derail this topic. Just stating clearly, without emotion (unlike most of you). And indeed your emotions is the least I care of. Today I want to run my server and I want the MSA to protect it.
Security + the company's name engaged makes this automatically top priority, atleast it's how I see things, probably my extravagant side.
