Players cannot see my server / module
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:11:38 pm »

This is very frustrating.  I have a module and would like to DM it with some friends online (Neverwinter Nights 1).  I've read every post on the site regarding this and still can't seem to get it to work.

I used http://portforward.c...p/portcheck.htm to forward the correct ports and setup a static IP as recommended for my router.  I'm using a Lynksis wrt160N router and windows vista.  I disabled windows firewall and am using Norton 360.  I even tried disabling the Norton firewall with no luck.  I also tried connecting direclty to the modem and bypass my wireless and no luck.    I can join other online games and connect to an online game that my friend is hosting, but no luck hosting my own game.  I tried launching the server using NWNServer.exe

Can anyone help me.  I've spent hours creating a module and can't even start it.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Have you tried setting up a DMZ instead of port forwarding?

Can they see your module if you start a new multi-player game through the game itself?  If they can, it would point to a firewall issue, possibly that NWN has permissions but NWServer doesn't.

no, they can't see the game through nwnserver.exe or through the game itself.  I tried both.  I'm reading on the DMZ now to see if this will work.  thanks for the feedback.

Did you try giving them your IP/port for direct connect?

Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) strictly prohibit (even taking steps to ensure you cannot) hosting a game server.  (due to bandwidth usage etc)

I know for a Fact the ISP Clear (Clearwire) will NOT let you host a server, period.

Most Mobile Internet Service Providers prohibit hosting a server too because the ISP's server will disconnect you constantly so even if you did get your server listed it may not stay up long.

I know Time Warner Cable will allow you to host, but a tech told me it's against the rules to host, not sure if it is or isn't.

It's most likely an ISP issue rather than your Router, if you properly set up port forwarding on your router I don't know what to tell ya.  I do know that Some ISPs are very restrictive about who they let access & modify their routers/modems. (The customers being one of those people who are NOT allowed to alter their modems etc)

I think it is fixed.  Thanks for all of your replies.  I reset all of my router settings and tried changing my static IP again and he is now able to see the game, but when he tried to login the game said he did not have the correct CEP HAK files.  I'm in the process of updating his CEP files to see if that will work.  I built the game with an old version of the CEP and he only has the latest version.  Does anyone know if coping old CEP files to the HAK folder will cause problems.  I thought players didn't need to have all of the same files as the DM?

No, the old CEP and the new version are different. So if you built it with an older version, then the players must also have that version. And to clarify, any HAK you use with the module, a player must also have.
