edit: also, just as a tip: since the i.d. duration is so short, it is handy to pile all the un-i.d'd items on a single sheet of your inventory, very close together, and then as soon as the spell takes effect start clicking on the Identify button of each but don't waste any time staring at the result, just move on to the next one. I usually can i.d. about 5 items with a single cast that way. Any that don't i.d. I know I will need either higher Lore or a merchant.
A man after my own heart. That's what I do, except if I have a ton of items to be IDed, I'll put the Examine command into my F12 quickslot. Then with my right hand on the mouse, my left hand on the F12 and Enter keys and the Lore potion (or other magic item which casts Identify) on the same inventory page as all my bunched-together unidentified items, I go to work. F12, click an item, Enter (to close the Description immediately), F12, click the next item, Enter, F12, click the next item....
You can identify seven or eight items with a single Lore potion or Identify cast that way, if you're quick about it. And like you said, don't bother to read the item descriptions while you're identifying them; there will be plenty of time to go back and do that after Identify wears off.
Also, in the unlikely event that you have too many unidentified items to fit on one inventory page (ie. six un-IDed tower shields), don't forget that the bracket keys ( [ and ] ) cycle through the pages of your inventory. So that's something else that your left hand can do while you're on an item-identifying frenzy, if that rare need arises.
