Since the old forums got hacked, I have a question.
« on: August 22, 2011, 08:50:30 am »

Are nwn.bioware.com and the multiplayer "master server" ever going to come back?

Sometimes I search the internet for a solution and it's only on the old message boards.  For example, I decided to play NWN's single player campaign again, and I wondered "Why doesn't Daelan use his rage?"...

I don't think so. They made a new, very limited, "homepage" for NWN under legacy games on their site:

http://www.bioware.com/games/legacy

(scroll down on that page)

Thats probably what we will have to live with for now.

Thankfully many NWN community members have scrambled (as usual) and are working on new homepages for NWN. This is probably the most meaty one so far:

I don't think it is impossible that someone on theese boards will answer you as well....only I am not the right one to ask about original campaign stuff...

As of this time, there is no information available if and when the legacy forums will ever come online again.  Same thing for the Master Server.

You can access the old forums via their cached pages.

Here's one I found about Daelan.

Thanks for the answers, guys.  As far as Daelan goes... It's a shame that he won't be able to use his full ability.  Might as well have a fighter in the party.  But I suppose he'll do, as support for my sorcerer.

He'll rage in HotU Chapter 1 if you still want him in your party in that campaign.

Daelen is the only true "fighter" you can get in the OC so there is not much of a choice there.  I'd still choose Grimgnaw as a melee hench if his scratchy voice and attitude doesn't annoy you.  He has some special properties in his attack that are unique and exhalted.

               Neverwinter_Knight77,

Regarding Daelan using rage:
Try Tony K's Henchmen AI override. I don't know if it's perfect, but I just tested it by recruiting Daelan with my level 12 ranger and 1) He has Uncanny Dodge III, 2) you can talk with him about when to use his rage, and 3) he does rage during battle (though it depends on what you've told him and on the opponents).

Regarding the master server:

Aaryn Flynn wrote...

Due to the recent hacking of our legacy NWN servers we have disabled the NWN master server which manages game authentication. We are currently retooling our NWN authentication process and will have a new server up as soon as possible.

We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements to our systems.

Regarding the legacy forums:

We turned off public-facing access to the legacy forums for reasons of safety and expediency but are currently working on a plan to bring them back in a way that ensures your information remains safe.  Look for more information on this in the near future as our plans develop.

On these latter two issues, both of those quotes are (I am pretty sure) the latest official word from Bioware/EA. As you can see (and I added links so you can see the original posts), basically, they said they would bring back the master server and that they were going to try to bring back the legacy forums. However, since both notes are 2+ months old and there has been no further word, many people are speculating that Bioware isn't planning to do either. No one has posted any better information, so you can draw your own conclusions.

At this point, I don't think the decision belongs to Bioware.  Bioware (the Bioware that we knew, anyway) would have informed us of the current situation and have kept us posted on a regular basis.

I rather suspect that EA is running the show here.

I agree with WS. I think it's safe to say that EA has ended NWN support. The old site and forums, as well as the CD keys stored thereon are most likely gone for good, a moot point if they have no intention of restoring the authentication server.

I'm an SEO for a major website, and the loss of these pages will be a huge hit on Bioware's domain authority. It will REALLY hurt them in the search engines. Sadly this too is a moot point if EA has no long term plans for Bioware. If EA stays true to form they'll be shutting the whole studio down sooner or later.

If nwn.bioware.com doesn't come back, I will be really screwed if I need to reinstall the game.  All of my CD keys were on there, and I really don't know where my manuals of NWN, SoU, and HotU are.  Lame.

Well you have a current installation now, am I correct? then save a copy of nwncdkey.ini as all your cd keys are in there

The file is in the NWN install/root directory ->> [Drive]:\\ NeverwinterNights\\NWN\\

You can recover your cd keys from nwncdkey.ini. Just right click the file and select "Open With" then choose "notepad".

Is there another way to do it? My old computer crapped out unexpectedly 2 days ago and I have no way to get to my old files.

If you're no longer able to access the drive Neverwinter Nights was installed to, then you're out of luck.

If the drive is still good but your motherboard is zonked, you can always buy an external hard drive case with Sata/USB connector and hook your drive to it and then plug it into your USB/Sata slot as another drive. Then you can access the content from another computer.

I do this a lot with old PCs that fry or when putting a new one together. The old drives simply become external and I turn them on when required for storage purposes or to access content that I still need.

FP!

I would suggest distrowatch.org ... get a ISO of a good LIVE CD or DVD Linux (these run from the dvd or cd, installing NOTHING to the hard drive) as these are GREAT for reading 'failed' drives and rescuing systems.

Best wishes to you.

Be well. Game on.
