Looking for an assassin build
« Reply #90 on: August 16, 2011, 06:37:54 pm »

Am I better of making this particular build a halfling as opposed to an elf? As Krazy pointed out, looks there would be alot of XP penalties. Am I understanding that right?

EDIT: Wait, prestige classes don't apply I think...

Depending on the Weapon being used, yes a Halfling (favorite class is Rogue) would work if deal with just 2 base classes.  Only issue you may need to concider Halflings get a penalty to strength instead of constitution.  Both Halflings and Elves get bonus to Dexerity so either or can work in a Dexerity build roughly the same.  Only exception is the Weapon class changes.  For a Halfling Medium size weapons are weilded with Two Hands.  Halflings cannot used Large Weapons, meaning no Spears, Halbs, Great Swords and Axe, etc...  Small weapons such as Shortswords are classifed Medium Weapons for Halflings.  So to get the best out of Dual Weilding you will want to be using Tiny Weapons as Off Hand and Small or Tiny Weapons as Mainhand to get the same effect of Medium Size Races such as Elves with Medium or Small in Main and Small or Tiny in off hand.

Hope I didn't confuse with my post...

Rogue type, dex based generally speaking means halfling is a better choice over elf.  Str will be 10-12 instead of 12-14 and it's no big deal. The Con loss of elf instead is much more significant and let's not forget halfling's small size (+1 AB/+1 AC, partially offset by not being able to use a tower shield), good aim (+1 AB with thrown weapons, which include sling), lucky (+1 ST) and skill boni. If we then add Rogue favorite class vs Wizard the picture is pretty clear. Halflings of Doom FTW!

               Hey Krazy,

So in other words a halfling needs to use daggers for the most part, especially in the off hand. Am I understanding that right?

Daggers or kukris, the only vanilla game tiny weapons but only if you want to dual wield 8and have no feats for a secondary tiny weapon).

For single wielding all small weapons are viable (shortsword, light hammer, mace, kama, handaxe etc.)

Pretty much Kail mentioned.  Depends if your Dual-Weilding if not Small Weapons are ok.  Halflings pretty much consider tiny weapons Small and small as medium etc...  Why they cannot use Large Weapons.

@ Nithium , I would start your own thread and remember, the more info you can give about what you'd like to play, the better the build the community can offer. *smiling*

@ C Barchuk, Lovely build. I always liked Mick Dagger's builds (and name *grin*). THo perhaps he, like me, plays a lot of elves, because certainly halfling is a better choice if you care about XP penalties, (and probably still better if you don't *laughing*. Elf is about the weakest class in most situations, but it doesn[t make them unplayable.) For a lvl 40 build I wouldn't worry and play the one you want, but I am biased to elves sooooo , yip halfling makes so much sense. You do lose some damage both from the -2 str and using tiny weapons, but, DA damage will be huge and in the environment you will play in, the high magic items will easily provide enough elemental damage vs crit immune that you simply won't notice.

As for the OC and Krazy's advice to play a single class, I'd add monk as a lot of fun to his list. (1 chesse lvl of SD won't hurt either *grin*

Have fun '<img'>

Elf is the best class for a dex based MM, however *grins*

I prefer halfling for dex based MMs. Small size, lucky, good aim make it an excellent choice.

I prefer Elf, but keep trying to create sorc based MMMs. Possibly the worst combination possible *grin*.

Sorc23-26/cleric10-13/M2-7, and, best of all.... 40% XP penalty. What more could a girl want? *laughing*

Have fun '<img'>

I have seen that thread on the  ECB , yes *grin*. JUst hadn't had time to look into it tho...

It will however suffer the worst possible penalty in any MP environment ...

Lack of quickslots!

Fast buff rod.  Many servers won't allow it though, because it can unbalance casters for PvP and can be abused to be used with offensive spells though it is buggy when used that way.  Works great in modules, though.  Got a note from my orthopedic surgeon who considers it a prophylatic measure against carpal tunnel.                Too much OT chatter. Allow me to post a bit about assassins.

These are the things I prioritise (though not necessarily in this order) for an assassin: APR (at least 7 to get at least 3 attacks in the 1st flurry), AB (so there's a good chance all 1st flurry attacks connect), AC (for when you just have to go toe-to-toe), and last but not least DC (I like a minimum of 45 with capped Int).
Here's a build I like for vanilla low to mid-magic:

Cleric(12)/Monk(1)/Assassin(27).

Halfling or Elf starting with 18 Dex, 16 Int, 16 Wis. All points to Dex and dual-wielding kamas of course. Ends up with (buffed in +5 gear) 10 APR (with FoB - so 4 attacks 1st flurry), 60+ AB, 70+ AC, and 46 DC.
Trickery domain is an obvious choice - then you can have several uses per day of Invisibility as well as the very handy Darkness and G Sanc.

Thanks for the response qaerinju. Very cool build. Okay, just curiosity's sake I looked up 2 of the legendary dwarflord's assassin builds:

The Assassin King
http://home.comcast....uild212244.html

The DeathStroke
http://home.comcast....uild208029.html

What would be a better build out of the two for playing from the ground up? Of course they both look fantastic and maybe the whole STR approach is the way to go. I hate to say it though...lol. Seems the Deathstroke would be more enjoyable pre-epic.
