Oh fer cryin' out loud! Kail and I have had many disagreements, so has MM and Kail, The Cinn, heck, even the legendary Dwarflord himself has!
Kail never "lashed out" at any of them (or me), for the reasons that he stated in this thread. Succinctly put, if one can actually offer a reasoned reply (re: one that actually makes sense) AND refrains from insults (which is basically in my book the "last resort"), then having a debate with Kail is often fun, challenging, and immensely rewarding!
Many a revelation and a wild ride into the guts of NWN have taken place during such a monumental debate!
I will give both Kail and Shia direct credit for turning me on to the MMM, for example. Especially the 1 level drop in Cleric with the Animal Domain for the increased summons...woohooo! I mean, 1 level gets you the Armor feats, Shield feat, Simple weapon feat, etc. Plus one more Domain as well.
That kind of got my attention...hehe. Thanks, Shia. Kail turned me on to 1 level of Fighter, I believe, and that got me thinking of combining Ranger and Assassin..a build that I have used very successfully! It is actually one of my favs, tbh. Nothing like having a full-fledged Mage that can do a very nice Death Attack, and then tear into the hapless foe with Dual weapons! It actually can make low level Summons useful! Kail also came up with a darned genius strategy involving low Summons...something I myself would probably never of thought of!
What I always find to be amusing, is that it seems to mostly be the "same ol'" individuals that get into a *tiff* with Kail.
Whatever.
Back to the topic - this kind of takes us to the "meat" (or essence) of "what is multi-classing good for?"
Basically, to improve your character, and to give her unique abilities and access to skills and feats that she would otherwise not have (as well as better capabilities).
So exactly where does that start (and end, for that matter)? I propose that it can start (and end) the moment that one has acquired that which one desires, basically.
So is a Wiz 36/Rng 2/Ass 2 an Assassin? My answer would be - sure, why not? Only my Assassin RELIES on the arcane to accomplish her work - that of assassination. She uses the Death Attack and access to the skills of an Assassin, to be sure. The build has a lot of synergy going for it, really.
However, if the OP doesn't want to play this way, that is fine! It surely is not for everyone.
