You favorite class combo?
« on: July 31, 2011, 04:24:17 pm »

With recent thread somewhat disparaging NWN multi-classing and another looking for weakest classes, I thought: how about something more positive with classes/multiclassing? What is your favorite class combo?  Not necessarily what you think is the most poweful, but what you find yourself playing/enjoying most.

For me it is Fighter/Rogue. My enjoyment of this stems back from playing Dwarven Fighter/Thief in AD&D 1st Ed. Just as then, I really enjoy a highly skilled fighter that can sneak, spot/disable traps, open locks and slug it out in a fight when need arises. Fighter/Rogue is the quintessential adventurer like Indiana Jones IMO.

Yeah that is only two classes and I always build three classes, but those are the two classes I have most often and I have added most of the non magic classes to the mix. My thoughts on those(favorites in bold):

Monk: Mainly of interest for the high APR with Kamas. Tried it a couple of times, but really I like a big sword better.

SD: A novelty for me. Since I don't spam HIPS, I can emulate the main feature of this class by carrying a few invis potions. I tend not to do this mix anymore. My joy in stealth fighter, is sneaking to the prime target in the room (usually spell casters) and taking them out before they even know the fight is on, then I slug it out in fighter mode. HIPS doesn't really change this. Only if I get in trouble do I use HIPS and I can do an invis potion to do this.

WM: Powerful offense, but I don't tend to do this anymore, it is just too feat starved on the way up as all feats are sacrificed to being a WM.

Paladin: Nice for fear/disease immunity in a small splash or with some Chr you can go for some Divine might/shield.

DwD: If I play a Dwarf, I play DwD. This is an awesome class to add to F/R. Dramatically beefing up defensive prowess.

CoT: Basically I use this as more a generalist. Nice Saving throw boost with no downside. While adds less new abilities, I tend to use this combo the most for pre epic. Seems to need less planning as no class is really dependent on high levels, so you can mix freely and you get lots of feats, good saves, no exp penalty.

Ranger: Probably my favorite combo at high levels. Ranger helps Rogue with more skill points than fighter, leting 4 or 5 rogue levels deliver nice skill set, Ranger also helps fighter with FEs and especially Bane of Enemies. At Epic levels, FE + BoE + EWS is very nice punch.

So there is my favorite Combo, the Fighter/Rogue/____. Yours?

Definitely Ranger/Rogue. I play that combo more than all the others I've tried, combined.

Second would be Fighter/WM. That can be a really fun combo when the environment isn't filled with crit immune adversaries.

I've just recently started playing through the OC again with a Fighter/Dwarven Defender. Never tried that class before, but so far it's been fun. I'll get back to you on that one.

I've been playing D&D since the 70's, and I've never cared for playing caster classes.

Fighter/Rogue is indeed a combo that always works. Since we have still a class slot to fill I'll expand the Ftr/Rogue to Ftr/Rogue/CoT, Ftr/Rogue/SD, Ftr/Rogue/WM, Ftr/Rogue/DwD which result all in pretty nice builds.

Anyhow, I guess that my personal favourite would be Rogue 24/Bard 6/PM 10 dual wielding epic dodger with SCV (and evidently crit immunity), epic trapper and taunter halfling of doom.

Builds I like include Cleric 26/Bard 4/RDD 10 Str focused battle cleric, Cleric 35/Ftr 2/Rogue 3 caster cleric, Wiz 35/Ftr 2/Rogue 3 and Wiz 35/Ranger 1/Assassin 4 multiclass melee mages, Druid 28/Ftr 6/Monk 6 all purpouse druid, Rogue 23/Barb 16/SD 1 str based terrifying rager sneaker, Rogue 15/Wiz 2/AA 23 epic dodging archer, Wiz 26/Ftr 8/Rogue 6 gnome dex based spellblade, Bard 26/BG 4/RDD 10 str/cha divine feated lasting inspirer, Bard 16/FTR 14/RDD 10 devastating crit machine and a bunch of other builds. There's just too many good combos out there 'B)'

Rogue for Skill Pts and the variety of class skills, though I most often go for Search, Tumble, and UMD.

Actual fave combos would include Ftr/ Rog. and Wiz/ Rog, but Ranger, DwD, and Druid have worked well, too.

Just curious. Where do you play all these 40th level characters?

I have played about 50 of the top Vault modules. I have never hit level 40 even once. I think I was only above 30 in 2 of the 50 mods...

It seems whenever builds are discussed it is all level 40 builds. I always wondered where they were played. Is everyone play on Level 40 PWs?

Wiz/AA, I was able to solo all dungeons on server I play with this. But the most I like on this char that noone could copy it and do the same. The build itself is very weak, so noone who tried it succeded and couldnt understand how could I do it.

Yep PW. Most action (PW) category servers are lvl 40 based, you must exp your char from lvl 1/4 to 40 but then the fun begins.

My favourite would be a halfling bard/rogue or bard/rogue/RDD. Usually a dex build dual weilding daggers. Very useful for rogue skills and party buffs. Probably not a very effective build for solo play, but I find it quite fun. It also works well for role play and is a great party character.

One premise is that I try to build with playability all over the character's career in mind for builds I actually play in modules/PWs (vs concept builds I have or will
"publish" at the ECB guild which may not follow this rule). That said, I also try to get all the most meaningful features by lvl 30, so if I play the same character across different modules not actually reaching lvl 40 is not a big concern. I'll miss a couple points of AB or AC or whatever, but no biggie. And finally I do play PWs which let you level up to lvl 40 and where lvl 40 characters too have their own challenges and I do enjoy the characters during the whole career (because of the premise above).

As an example, my Wizard 35/Ranger 1/Assassin 4 can be played as is no matter the starting/ending level.

Sure, talking always about lvl 40 builds might not be appropriate, but then again you asked a very general question about class combos and so I gave a generic lvl 40 builds answer '<img'>

The World of Aenea for me. I have around half-dozen 40th builds, and a few that are less. But the end is not 40th if one does not wish, as one may Reincarnate and Ascend to gain abilities and immunities, I have yet to do this, but may do this soon with my casters.

As for mods, I used the Sands of Fate series to complete a build at 40th, though this was not the designers intent.

I have a Wiz 27/Rogue 2/AA 11 build (a spellbow) which is very enjoyable and IMO not difficult to play. Not having seen yours nor knowing where you play I don't know why you call your Wiz/AA weak, I can just say that one can make pretty effective builds out of Wiz/AA.

I like Bard/CoT/RDD (Bard 12, CoT 18, RDD 10) - Good saves, decent self buffs, AC and AB aren't too bad, and even the halfling I used it for can get a DC 50 dev crit off it.

I also like Rogue/WM/SD (Rogue 31, WM 7, SD 2).  Trickier to do, it has to be with a weapon you have a proficiency with already at level 1 to make work with a non-human.  Since SD uses the feats a WM also needs it helps some with the feats needed.  Reflex save is good, but will save is the big negative here.  AC can be good, dex builds can have decent AB and AC still, plus epic dodge, damage when you can get crits and sneaks in is really impressive, even moreso on strength builds.

I do a lot of offline solo testing for my module and have come to really appreciate the RANGER / SORC. combo. The ranger side packs lots of fighting and HP oriented goodies, sorc. gets me spells (the CHA primary attribute helping social skills too), and the selection of a PIXIE familiar means I have a rogue in the party more or less (plus a great remote operated scout). True, I do have to load up on healing magic, but that is the only base I can't cover with this build for the most part.

Be well. Game on.

Any monk shifter without dragon form.

Unfortunately, they suck in most high-magic environments but I still have fun playing them regardless.

Other than that, any class combo with rogue, bard or assassin to satisfy my UMD addiction.
