NWN PC
« on: July 01, 2011, 11:18:03 pm »

Hey guys,  hope all of you are still enjoying the best game in the world! ahem. Anyways, I wanted to know some thoughts on building a PC strictly for NWN1. The main reason is because I seem to have never ending issues with win7 and newer cards both ATI & Nividia, and the fact that the game just runs and looks way better when played on a system that the game was built for (i.e. XP, single core processer, geforce2/4 card with the right opengl support.) But I wonder what hardware worked the best during NWN1 golden years... I'm prolly going to get an old pentium 4 w/ a 2.8Gig CPU 333 ddr ram geforce 4 card. But If anyone has some info on a good system for NWN1 let me know. It will prolly be harder to find a Geforce2, but may not matter. Anyways if anyone cares enough then hit me up, hopefully I can finally have a system to play all my old favorites.

I think it is a waste to build an old slow PC to play NWN. There is no issues with multicore processors and right up till the 2xx series of NVidia cards work great. I run an 8800 GT and it works perfect with my Quad core.

I get atrocious graphics lag with my 8800 GTX 512, and I know others who do as well - virusman also has an 8800 and bemoans the performance, among others. The last nvidia card to support NWN propelry was the 7900 - I bought one specifically for that reason, for all of 44 bucks on ebay.

Past that, you shouldn't have any issues at all, once you finally manage to get it installed. I've run NWN, player, dm, and toolset on both vanilla home premium 7 and sp 1 without any real issues.

Click    FYI  game has to be updated to version 1.69 to run on Vista and Win7. I had Vista ,game ran ok but there was

small annoying issues.Could of been from graphics but who knows. I agree with other comments floating around the

forums. If not just for NWN go fast with win7.Havnt tried Win7 yet myself. But I think the best platform in my opinion and

experience is XP for toolset and game. The game just works on XP . Maybe Im lazy ''

EDIT: Why dont we have a spot on forums for people to post their systems and O.S. ?'<img'>

NWN runs fine on Windows7, all you have to do is set XP compatability mode and install the final patches. My machine is running Win7 -64. I had zero issues getting it running.

I upgraded from a 7900 to an 8800GT and NWN is much faster/smoother on the 8800GT.

The only consistent problem with Nvidia Cards started with the Fermi cards (GT[S|X] 4xx).

Yeah, while the Vistas and Win7s should work, Windows XP is the best of them all.

Intel single, dual and quad cores not a problem at all while some AMDs may encounter some problems.

I have a XP system with a Intel Dual Core socket 775 along with a ZOTAC Nvidia 9800GT ECO
and the game just runs as smooth as butter at high resolution and in any scenario, though I'm
using the last Nvidia drivers that were for the support of the 9x00 series before new cards followed.

You can build yourself a nice brand new system with some previous gen tech still available on the market today at fairly cheap price.

I'm currently running NWN on two different PC's my main is win7, i7 cpu, NVIDIA GTX 460
2nd is, WinXP, Pentium D, and a NVIDIA 7600 GS. 1st PC no "major" problems the game runs, but the fps is way lower than it should be, and sometimes I have other random problems. The 2nd PC runs great except for the extension limit option in nvidia control panel messes things up which sucks because you lose some of the hi res textures with it on, but lose other effects that the driver should support with it off. I just remember maybe like some of you guys, playing this thing on a good old single core geforce2/4 PC and it running really perfect.

Thanks for the input guys,

               @ IronRook

I actually have that patch and I'm aware of the compatibility setting '<img'>
The game runs on my win7 just not like I want it too.

You have a GTX 460. This is a Fermi card. As I indicated, these are when NVidias problems started. All the Fermi cards have very low framerates in NWN. Any older generation 8800,9800, 260 etc, get faster and better with each new generation until you hit fermi.

I used to run NWN on my old single core and ATI 9700pro, people are forgetting that perfect in those days was not the same as today. I ran at 800x600 to keep acceptable frame rates and some features were off and no AA.

You shouldn't need to mess around with the extension limits in pre fermi cards either. I don't notice any issues with my 8800GT.

Today I run 1920x1200 with all features enabled, and 4x AA.  You will not get better results running NWN on old hardware, you just need to Avoid Fermi cards.

Nvidia is aware of the problem with the newer cards but hasn't fixed it yet... I have an older card in my spare PC 7600GS but If I have extension limit on my textures are stuck in compatibility mode.
If I turn it off, it uses 64 bit textures but some of the effects are grainy, i.e. the glow around the NWN logo on the splash screen before the main menu.

The only problem i have with NWN on my Win 7 is when I click anything it mimizes straight away. So I have to disable explorer when ever I play (Damn aero theme also messes up my age of empires. A lot of games I play with explorer disabled)

Direct X should not be the newest version also as far as I know.

I am thinking a lot to buy a new computer but I don't know if I dare lol. The worst nightmare would be to have a super spanking new monster computer and that NWN laggs or doesn't work at all :-(

Same here.  Me berry berry sceerd bout dat. ''

What I would really find useful is a single sticky thread, perhaps in the Tech Support forum, where each community member simply posts a brief description of their OS, hardware, DirectX version, version of the game they bought and any "tweaks" they had to apply (adjustinfg drivers, setting compatibility, custom installation selections, etc.) beyond just installing the game and begin playing immediately.  Had such a thread been developed on the legacy boards it would need to be reconstructed again anyway. '<img'>

TBH, clicking the install button is about all the effort I want to be involved in and have the time for, so if there is a problem, time constraints seldom allow me to get involved in any experimentation or research to get the blasted buyer-friendly software to run.  Had I any spare time for such nonsense I would spend it lying on the beach catching some rays, gazing at the wildlife, dreaming of bygone days and nights.

DirectX...

NWN is an OpenGL game and it specifically needs OpenGL 1.x support which is what's currently broken in Nvidia's Fermi firmware.  Before it died, my 8800GTX ran 1920x1080 just fine.  One gotcah with their Windows driver is that you need to disable multithreading in the driver itself.

NVidia's known about the Fermi problem for well over a year and ignored it until very recently.  They've lost my business for at least this generation.

If some people would get Xfire, as I have been preaching multiple times, then we could, apart from one million other benefits...also see each others hardware and system (except Direct X only maybe but you can edit this into the system description).

Xfire *caugh* automatically *caugh* uploads your specs with one click.

Look at my profile, scroll down to the bottom, to see my specs that I shamelessly flaunt here despite the fact that this computer was state of the art..........like 6 years ago.

Plasmajohn,
what has Direct X anything to do with what you mentioned? Looked to me like you where talking hardware stuff only...while Direct X is a software thing strictly....
