Neverwinter - The Foundry
« on: June 10, 2011, 02:36:24 am »

E3 evaluates The Foundry. Cryptic's modding and development engine.

Certain things such as the ability to morph terrain or handpick the stats on loot in your custom maps won’t be in The Foundry, at least not at first.

Massive turnoff for me. I was SOOO hoping to have the same capabilities with Neverwinter's toolset as both NWN and NWNX give us now.

Lead Producer Andy Velasquez talks about The Foundry

Seems there will be no truly persistent worlds as Neverwinter Nights has right now. Only user-generated side-quests that stem out from Cryptic's main (and only) persistent world. *shudders* I had such high expectations.

  • There will be a complete set of standalone content that Cryptic will create for the game.
  • When the game launches, there will be a robust set of tools on The Foundry for players.
  • They're trying to design it to be an easier version of the Aurora toolset while maintaining a high level of customization.
  • They're still trying to work out exactly how much they want to allow users to be able to do with it.

Your custom content will also require submission and rating before being released and playable, and user ratings from then on to decide whether or not it will remain accessible.

I can understand not allowing user created loot into the player created mods if they're all forced to be part of the main "world" of Neverwinter.  They don't want the +80 swords of n00b slaying in peoples hands any more than NWN admins want them in their worlds.

LOL - ongoing user ratings determine if something stays available - HA sounds like rolling chaos to me, and I won't build with such self-depricating toys.

I'm sticking to NWN - it works and does all I need; especially the toolkit which rocks all day and night.

Yesh.  I would make it more like user ratings have an impact on wether something is available or stays on the site, but not the sole criterion.  The reasoning is there is too much potential for abuse there.  Perhaps an independent panel of judges to make the final determination.  Like well this is a piece of junk it's just got a lot of high ratings.  Of course they would not say that they would just not allow junk to be kept just because of high ratings.  Eventually people would get a clue that only truely decent stuff would be available and not just stuff they had rated highly, for whatever reason, legitimately or otherwise.  The current model seems like a recipe for a mild disaster.

I agree with the OP. In fact this is a deal-breaker for me. If you don't want my items in the main world then give me a closed instance to work in.

What was the initial deal breaker for me is that the game is going to be a speeded cookie cutter MMO instead of something groundbreaking in D&D computer playing.

I could be wrong...but from what I've seen from this game so far I doubt it.

In the case when the game is totally uninteresting....what do you need its toolset for?

Ok....I'll throw in a disclaimer for thoose that actually might like theese kinds of games and have been waiting for a toolset for them...but still...do you really want to play WoW?

I think WoW's mechanics are actually quite good for the most part and would love to be able to build NWN-style PWs and campaigns with it.  Unfortunately, that's not what this will actually be.
