This doesn't bode well for Neverwinter 2011
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:07:30 am »

If this is true....who will continue to finance the production of Neverwinter?

Hmm...I guess Cryptic and Atari probably has some agreement signed on that...so it shouldn't be a problem right?

In line with the previously stated strategy of fewer but more profitable releases and further expansion into casual online and mobile games, the Company has determined that external development creates more flexibility in the 3
changing marketplace. Therefore, the Company has made the decision to divest itself from Cryptic Studios. The divestiture process is underway and more details will be provided as appropriate.

The quote is from this document:

Another discussion is running here:

Why this is in the DDO forums I do not know....

And Massively posted some more info.

Where this quote gives a breath of hope:

"development on the Bay Area studio's Neverwinter project will continue as normal for the time being."

Sounds to me like they are just dumping a studio that has cost them money - nothing new in the business world. Further down in the document is this line:

"In April 2011 Atari announced a project to restructure Eden Games, its development studio headquartered in Lyon (France). The proposed plan aims to reduce the workforce to approximately 30 employees, adjusting costs to the size of the business and its revenues. The legal process has been engaged with employee representatives and the restructuring is expected to be ended by the end of the first quarter of this fiscal year. This restructuring project is part of Atari’s long-term strategy to adapt to the changing marketplace and direct resources against the most profitable business segments. Atari continually evaluates its resources to ensure that they are properly matched against its product slate and strategic goals."

As to how this will affect anything related to Neverwinter 2011 or any other game Atari produces is a crap shoot - until they pull trigger its really anyone's guess as to how the chips will fall...

Instead of long term they should have written SHORT term.

Generally working for a customer you are probably not going to have after that project is not a good idea...as it probably doesn't push the project to be as good as it can be.

That they are still making another Neverwinter is totally good news for me so far...so there is some amount of happiness and hope still.

Although the game I'm really looking for is more probable to come from an even smaller developer.
