LOL - now you'll associate me with abuse of animals (in even a figurative way). FEH. What, if anyting, in my posts you people found so wounding I cannot guess.

While I will admit, in that forum I often felt as if I were dealing with animal intellect at best, lemmings are as lemmings do. *points direction to nearest cliff and waves*

Well, since you've now painted any that disagree or do things differently with such a wide brushful of disdain, my initial regret at your removal there is cured.

Thank You, for that at least.

Was kind of thinking the same thing myself.

If a hobby, which is supposed to be enjoyable, starts causing this much stress, aggrvation, vitriol and (IMO) over the top histrionics and hatred, a re-evaluation of whether said hobby is really worth it may be in order.

IMO obviously.

This whole thread would seem to be somewhat counter productive... but thank you for an entertaining morning.

I I love pie!  Can I have a slice, purdy please? (note obscure reference to texas).

About my sig - all I can say is, break out Sophocles and get reading.  Once one understands what he is saying, then it will make sense.  He is definitely not talking about natural calamities here.  I consider what you are doing, Ehye, and what Jenna has referenced is exactly what Sophocles meant...

obscure East Texas reference noted. Pie all around, unless of course you want cobbler.

ATM - there are at least three NICE people I am assisting with code advice and assistance. I do that for NICE persons who frame their requests as an earnest in inquiry. This group of closed-minded admins never did so.

I think I will never know the real reason with certainty as to why the immature admin kicked me - but it would seem that I missed the post that said their whole forum was a popularity contest and any who had ideas other than 'windows is the best and secure too' camp would loose.

They propose that, because I did not drop all my other affairs and devote my time to writing scripts for their use to secure their Windows servers that they are somehow justified in kicking me out of their 'security' discussions. Other rude persons opt to carp at my posts, in this thread and others, then suggest that _I_ need therapy.

Here is my best advice ONE more time, if you read it or have someone read it to you as the case may be, you'll see I'm only honest and consistent here. Windows is flawed hugely, it is a mass of back doors and poorly wrought subsystems that amount to a liability where security is concerned. Windows is SLOW, it handles resources poorly often leading to the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH. Windows users often believe rebooting a system is 'system administration' what it is is throwing in the towel. FYI my linux server has not been rebooted in about six months (the last time hardware was modified). There are thousands of tools for script kiddies that target windows because it is so flawed.

Upon rendering such advice, I get treated like some kind of leper. Hardly mature for a server admin. Further lack of reasonable behavior is evidenced by their justifying their attacks upon another's views - by suggesting they need therapy. You Admins need a new attitude, a new operating system and a healthy dose of good manners. I have to wonder if you treat your players and DMs this poorly. I certainly would NOT want to participate in such servers as these attacks you mete out upon those who have views different than yours are rather disturbing.

So, as I did not drop all my other pressing tasks and devote my time to writing security scripts for you, you justify this poor behaviour. Or is it you justify it by your 'five admins did not like you' reason? Or is it something else? Who knows, I certainly do not care.

You will note, I have not posted any information regarding your plans or private discussions - had I been vindictive I most certainly could do so, but my point here was to let the admins not in that group of five know why I was suddenly squelched.

In my posts, I clearly delinieate what is a colloquialism or figure of speech and what is factual and what is opinion and experience. Something many of you do not bother with, opting instead to make wild and unqualified statements - often in the form of rude personal attacks.

Fine by me, show the world what a bunch of rabble you can be - I'm going back to my stable server, where we even have the WISH spell coded, to add more fine and stable details to it, and watch as you umpteen jokers continue to ignore good advice in favor of your own demonstrably flawed methods (you've been successfully attacked - I see lots of 'double  digits' in the griefers' scoreboard for you and THAT speaks volumes of the success you've had and will continue to have owing to your inability to accept that windows has any flaws. Much like yourselves.

I'm quite done here, you all are obviously going to continue acting bunch of carping whelps - do as you please, you have chosen your path while I choose that of stable security. Go have your carpy fun children. *waves*

Though his style in bringing this to the public may leave to desire, ehye's statements about the proper selection of a server OS are true. If you don't have at least windows server 2008 at your disposal (or 2003), than you should use linux or bsd for any publicly available server. You as the server admin are responsible for the nonsense or even criminal things anybody does with your server if he can hijack it. I would not take that risk. Linux is not only more secure out of the box, it is much easier to do admin jobs on.

Just my 2¢

Greetings

After reading the posts on this topic, I sat down and
started thinking about all the times someone ever asked me for advice and then ignored
it. I understand that from a technical standpoint linux is a better system to
run a NWN server than windows. However, I also understand that from a builder’s
aspect switching from windows to linux would involve more than most people are
willing to deal with. From what I gathered the majority (if not all) of the
admins of said group all use windows where ehye only uses linux. I can
understand where the conflict comes in over difference of opinion, on the other
hand, I can see where reinstalling an operating system and then having to rebuild
a mod would not be a well-liked option either. I am going to school to become
an IT. Personally I wouldn’t want to only learn one operating system as I feel doing
so would limit my abilities as a IT Tech. granted I am not a great scripter as I
am still learning, but I think if I had been in the situation I would have
offered my best advice first. If that had not been a suitable solution then I would
have realized I gave it my best and if I had been removed, I would not have
held a grudge. It comes down to personal preference of how people like to do their
own thing.

I once had a pair of DM’s who were helping to add to the
former server I was running. At one point, the quest system we were using broke,
and would not allow anyone with a sub race to take quests. I wanted to solve
that issue first; they wanted to add more quests. When I refused to allow them
to add more quests, they both quit on me and went and built their own server.
They wanted me to allow them to hold a DM position until a couple days later, I
promptly removed them as DM’s as I felt they resigned and needed no time to
continue to badmouth me on my own server. Their decision to “take their ball
and play over here” was their choice. When they resigned, it was my choice to
remove them as DM’s promptly.  Was either
choice right? Maybe, maybe not but the fact that this game allows us each to
make our own choices is IMHO what makes this game so great. We all get our own
choice when it comes to making our own PW or MOD.

This outburst of OTT virtiol and histrionics is a perfect example of why I've choosen to not become involved in any PW team since 2003.

There's always one wing-nut that blows things way out of proportion and destroys the collaborative process for others.

I've always found it funny when someone acts hostile while at the same time seeks approval and acceptance from those it's directed at. If you really don't care dude, you wouldn't be posting.

And... why hasn't this been locked down yet?
