For the floundering server admins -
« on: April 05, 2011, 05:32:29 pm »

Recently in the wake of your rash of hacker attacks, you organized to try to prevent further griefings and crashings on your servers, by that group of miscreants who obviously have too much time on their hands (merselpath & crew).

Your administrator has demonstrated a perversity, a double standard, and a penchant for arbitrary insults.

Your administrator dropped me from your discussion board. Since then I have given the admin a day to retract and apologize for the action but have not received reply. This then is the text of my last message sent to the admin by means of the forum for TalesOfTheSilverMarches.

...quote author=TSM Junkie (Moulinous)
I went ahead and removed you from the Admins group snce you stated you have not been having any problems with them. I wish you well.
end quote

Having been insulted by your rude actions and such not being retracted in a reasonable period of time, I can only agree with my (MASTERS DEGREE) lead scripter when she says "despite the best advice of those who know what they are talking about, other people insist on doing the most massively stupid things." By all means, please do revel in your stupid. Your arbitrary and double standards are disservice to your forum and all the admins who have joined.

Please do carry on.

Please do DELETE MY ACCOUNT - I wish to receive NOTHING from your forum again. You have done yourself and your group a great disservice. I'll resolve just to smile when I see your servers down (as they are several times a day generally).

IF I RECEIVE ANY FURTHER MESSAGES FROM YOUR FORUM I WILL REPORT THEM AS SPAM.

GM_ODA

I must presume jealousy here regarding your instable servers. It looks good on nobody.

The double standard is in your admitting members who have no server at all, and therefore, like me 'have no trouble with hackers' at this time. Likewise being arbitrary looks good on nobody.

I wish you all the luck in the world with your hacker, lag, and crash issues. As noted, I have none.

Be well. Game on.

Uh... Why is this rant (apparently about some issue on some PW servers?) posted in NWN1 General?

there is a group of PW admins working to put together a set of scripts to help keep griefers out of PWs. The problem is all of that group uses windows as their OS. ehye_khandee stated that linux is the choice to make this happen. While this may be true, the PW admins are unwilling to switch the OS of thier systems. Since ehye_khandee only offers Linux is the best type comments, he was removed from the group. I was not the one who made the decision, or the one who removed him. I wish him well, and hope that his PW remains ungriefed.

This is a personal flame, and it just makes you look worse to post it here, Eye. And tbh, posts like this make it even more clear why someone would choose to dis-include you in the first place. If you have a problem, take it up with the server owners - not the community as a whole. This coming from a Linux user who had nothing to do with the situation, as an aside.

No clue why it was posted here either.

Have to agree with Jen. It really doesn't look good for you or the server you are representing. It is a personal grief and flame post and really does nothing for anyone.

Maybe sue someone for being removed from a private discussion forum?

Pretty counter productive... I'll agree with the others who have posted.

Sort of off point but I have done a couple of scripts regarding, aimed at griefers.
Those would be naming all traps to the trapper, so you can track randomly layed traps.
A detrapper npc who will remove traps from high traffic areas.
A script that punishes PC killers who kill other PC's who are x, 3 lvls lower in mine, than the PC that killed them.
A general server shout stating that so and so PC has killed so and so PC, and the area where this occured.
A jail mechanism with a bail-out option. (Persistent over server resets).
And finally a contract hit option where a DM or perhaps a PC, (player/dm) can put out a contract on another PC.
This will result in an attempted assasination of said PC, also persistent over resets, with one attempted assassination. This final option may appear to be a method to grief other players but could be tailored as a mechanism for others than DM's to hold as a threat over certain players who have been flagged as griefers. The point of this is that the player with the contract on them will not know for sure who put the hit out on them, and there is an option for the contracted player to remove any contract on them for a fee.
So those are some things you might be interested in.
Good luck with the efforts.

As ffbj has so eloquently posted, one can find just about all the anti-griefer scripts one needs on the Vault and among most Server Admin types of forums.  All of my PWs had such (the last one having a lot of custom stuff, really good!).  All on Windows.

As for Ehye...wow.  Just plain wow.  Staff should NEVER have flames in the open - this sort of thing should happen behind closed doors (assuming it should happen in the first place - which it shouldn't).  Going on an open forum like this, and doing personal flames against a Staff of a PW is the worst sort of etiquette that I know of.  And since your behavior before in the old forums plus this rant does add support for the type of handling you seem to have received, I see absolutely no reason for the Staff in question not to give you the ban hammer.

Pride comes before the fall.  See my sig below.

"The keenest sorrow (and greatest truth) is to recognize ourselves as
the sole cause of all our adversities.

- Sophocles"

Is UTTERLY UN TRUE. Ask anyone with cancer and you will know the truth there too. Such aphorisms are the crutch of those who cannot think clearly on their own. This particular one is a lovely method to allow the one uttering it to divorce themselves in their own mind from any issues others may have. Weak, I say, very very weak. The only 'close to true' 'truism' I have ever encountered is this:

All generalisations are wrong.

Fact is, if the admin of that forum were serious and honest about managing it, he/she could have tolerated an opinion that advocated a different OS than that admin uses themselves. The brevity of their message on kicking me, their ignoring my replies in private, both show the lack of good administration.

I was asked to join that forum and share my lore. I did so freely. Before I became disabled, I charged over 100 dollars an hour for the benefit of my lore and my customers always asked me back when they needed more. I shoot straight and I don't mince words. If that group was so bent in that direction, you'd think they'd have posted 'no linux advocates allowed' - but they did not. I was booted for NO INFRACTION OF ANY POSTED RULE, but on the arbitrary whim of the admin. Frankly, as a player, I would not want to waste my time on a server like that as the same could happen to a player as happened to an invited poster.

It is a sad thing to ask advice, but only if the advice agrees with your preformed opinion.

Be well. Game on.

I don't see a problem with Ehye venting his oppinions in this forum or any other forum.

Personally I was always sceptical about many bannings from PW servers and their communites. I have seen many examples where admins where just being asholes.

I am not saying this is the case with the servers involved here (as I don't know who they are anyway) but I think any colaboration of PW's in this sort of field is potentially bad.

However...as an NWN player theese days I am pretty free to choose whichever I want and I usually choose ones that have a playstyle that fits me...even though it can be hard to find the right one occasionally....

Don't want to go into this here really but many RP servers have gone in an for me undesired direction....

@Superfly; This is not just one or two PWs. This is in fact 25 PWs and thier Admins and Scriptng counterparts as well as several NWNX people.

The people we are talking about are folks who purposely log in to crash servers. Not just grief anymore.

Amia: 150
Arelith: 140
FRC: 120
Arabel: 80
Ravenloft: 75
Harry Potter: 50
Thain: 35
EfU: 30
Silver Marches: 30
Cormanthor: 30
Cormyr & Dalelands: 25
Narfell: 25
Anphillia: 25
The Way Inn: 20
Thay: 15

Other RP/PW servers (including Zombie Survivals): 75

That above is a brag list of players who were having a good time ruined by them or the server itself crashed. And you think that this is okay? Strange "community" spirit, Superfly.

Now on to Ehye-
I was contacted by no less than 5 PW Admins who had grown tired of you doing as you do here a constant barage of how great and wonderful your server is with a player count in the high 5s at most times. I know you are very proud of your server and  have looked a few times and some of it is very nice. I am not debating that. I am proud of what we have done. I am sure the worse server up has someone somewhere proud of what they have done.

Crowing about it is one thing but stating several times that THIS IS LAW and that EVERYONE must do it your way is very counterproductive to just about everything. It reminds me of the US Congress who forgets often that the basis of a collation is not one man one law but many people talking and forming into a working group.

You stated several times that you do not have a problem with the griefers and offered really no scripting or advice on how to deal with it except rewiring everyones server to a different system. After a bit I sent you a polite message informing you that we have gone ahead and removed you from the group.

I did not say Hey, 5 other PW Admins want you to leave.
I did not say hey, you are being an arse just tone it down.
I did not post it to a public forum to slam you.

I merely sent you a PRIVATE message and one day later recevied the message you posted plus another stating the fact that I and I quote here 'spring them on us like some rash ****-slap.'

I am sorry you feel offended Ehye. I am hoping the discussion about cancer you made was not a dig at me since you know that I am Stage Four and terminal...if so a bit of a low blow but like in all things I will be the duck and let it be the water.

Hope you all have a better day, folks.

If my posts on that forum were SO offensive, please post them here. Show the people how awful I was if you think I was awful. All I ever said was this is stable, this works. YOU invited me there to discuss the issues, and I did. YOU and your 'five admins' are overly sensitive and took offence? At what? Where did I _ever_ state as you assert "THIS IS LAW"? Frankly, this is false, and I defy you to find that quote. Further tarnishing my reputation because these other servers are instable and operated by persons of extraordinary thin skin shows the true colors here all around.

Yes, out of the box, linux is more stable and secure than windows. This is my point. You don't have to like it, but you'd be hard pressed to refute it with factual accounts.

As they say in Texas "You can lead a horse to water, but you gotta work d*mn hard to drown it." Sometimes, it is not worth the work. This is one of those cases.

Facts are facts, you invited me. You gave me no clue no warning. You banned me. Juvenile behavior at best. Poor server admin in action there.

I stand by my every word.

What, you want me to write your security scripts for you now? My rates are outlined above, and only double for you.

Be well. Game on.

I suggest that everyone who thinks this is childish, quit answering the posts here. That being said, you may be able to lead a horse to water, but you can't make the cowboy stop kicking it if its his nature.

LOL - now you'll associate me with abuse of animals (in even a figurative way). FEH. What, if anyting, in my posts you people found so wounding I cannot guess.

While I will admit, in that forum I often felt as if I were dealing with animal intellect at best, lemmings are as lemmings do. *points direction to nearest cliff and waves*
