Ranger/Blackguard idea...
« on: March 21, 2011, 09:37:42 am »

                Hey all!

I have yet another question.  Is it worth going Ranger/Blackguard even if I'm not going to dual-wield?  I was thinking of fighter/blackguard, but I don't want to Cross-class to get hide.  I'm going to wield a Bastard sword since my friend on our school server is going to give me bloodletter.  I really want a blackguard, but I've heard that ranger is only useful for dual-wield.  Is this true?

Thanks

If you are not not relying on dual wield maybe the fighter/BG combo is a better choice. A ranger becomes btw effective only at higher levels and has some more limitations on armor: light armor allows your dual wield while medium does not but basically it is worthless at higher levels.
Personally I play rangers as fighters (with medium armor and 2 handed weapon or single handed weapon + shield) until their 6th lvl then the 2nd attack adds together with the offhand weapon attack a number of 3 attacks per turn (you have to switch on a light armor in order to take all of those benefits at thei maximum).
If you get the "bloodletter" nothing stops you to use a worthy offhand weapon but don't build a ranger(BG if you don't dual wield.

Ranger has more uses beyond dual wield.
They get 4 skill points/level instead of 2/level like a fighter.
They have more class skills open: hide/ms/search/set traps/animal empathy.
They have Favored Enemies for extra damage agains a few types.
They can summon a pet.
And they still fight as well as fighters, have the same hit points and attack tables.

Someone previously posted about wanting to buidl a Fighter/Paladin and I actually suggested a Fighter/Paladin/Ranger and it was mostly Ranger:

You could do similar and substitue Blackguard for Paladin. I generally don't bother with Ranger unless it is going to epic levels and I can get "Bane of Enemies".

Though I don't know what you want to get out of Blackguard. I never play evill characters so never build one.

Also any fighter/Blackguard levels give your Ranger full access to heavy armor. Can't dual wield in it, but can wear and use a shield.

I really don't know why Rangers are a weak class in some peoples minds. Solid class, mostly the same as fighters with benefits. They don't have to be light armor dexers. I never play light armor dex rangers.

Cool, that build looks great.  It's just that my server I play on is heavily RP based and I want to be an elf so it seemed natural to be a Ranger.  As for the evil thing, my subrace is Drow so it seemed natural again to be evil.  Thanks alot
