To Hell With NWN MMO! NWN3 Would Be Better!
« Reply #30 on: February 26, 2011, 09:51:28 am »

I don't get why people get stuck on the monthly pay thing. I mean...it is just a technical thing. For NWN you bought the game and both expansions...so even though you didn't pay every month you still payed some money along the way...

Sure...this time you will have to pay a bit more....but THEN the game will be tailored for multiplayer AND come with a company hosted PW .... AND they will produce enough content so you wont have to AND you can make your own stuff .... AND .... it goes on....

I just don't get the negativity. I would have understood if a few people whined that this game will suck but it feels like it is a vast majority...(sure - I know this thing with games of today and especially MMO's, but comon'...the people at Cryptic did say some good things didn't they? Lets give it a frekkin' chance...)

Can anyone around here be positive together with me?

Let's do an experiment: No more negative posts...and see where that leads us...

Its all good and positive to express that to pay to play is your cup of tea, or to give it a chance, however, you do realize that it is just as good to let those that think it is not what they are willing to do have their say too. NWNs community have every right to weigh in on this new title, whether thay are going to try it, or not. They earned that right by still being with NWN after all these years, of putting up with 1, rather less than ideal expansion, and the loss of Ataris backing. Saying that You will not play a pay to play game is not negative. Saying you will pay for the experience is not positive. Playing a game is neither positive or negative it is mearly a game after all.

I believe that you will find that after all this time with NWN, we are spoiled when it comes to Video games. Why, we have had excellent developer support, good expansions, that yes cost money, and a great host of community made extras for free. In addition to all that we got a great game that we could change to our individual tastes, play SP, MP, or build in for many hours, for basicaly free, minus of course any power, internet, and time costs. But the game itself is rather free to play.

This new title is going to be no where near as versitile as the original. It can't be because as NWN showed it is not as profitable to the maker to allow such "free" goodies. Supporting via another company (gamespy) is a drain of resourses. Alowing huge amounts of community made content, would be a logistical nightmare for the one PW of the new title. That does not mean there won't be CC, but I am sure there will be a staff of folks editing, checking and even denying any CC submitted.
Bio-Ware did not have to worry about that, Cryptic will.

Finally As someone who followed the pre-release details of NWN2 with great enthusiasm, untill it became clear that it was not going to improve what NWN has, I say if you want to jump on board the bandwagon for this new title, feel free to do so, but please do it over on the new title's forum. This is NWNs forum, where NWN, the original, and in my opinion the greates game to grace the PC, is about. NWN is not pay to play. NWN fans, I'm going to assume nearly all of them, Like that it is not pay to play.
Those of us who are going ot stay with NWN, don't need to be told, that because we don't want to try it, or buy it, or rent it, or whatever, are being negative. we are not being negative. We are being opinionated, just as you who think the new title is going to be good are.

Pay to play may well be the dirrection of games from now on. I am sure that there will be thousands of people paying for the service. Me, I am an old stingy git. I am not paying for anything, especialy when I already have a better game that does not require a monthly subscription. If it is to your taste, then by all means have a great time. I'll be here, having  just as much fun, with a bit more money in my pocket.

I wouldn't worry overly (or at all actually) about any perceived negativity here. After all, this is the home of Neverwinter Nights, and those who come here do so because they love that game. It's fine not to be excited about a particular game. I'm not drooling with anticipation myself, but I'm not going to say I won't check it out or try it. That seems premature at best, and foolish at worst. It would be like the old Neverwinternights (an ancient MMO, no less! Check it out on the 'Net) diehards saying they'd never even take a look at Neverwinter Nights by Bioware, because it MUST suck, since it is not the same as what they were used to playing. People who decide not to try something before even seeing that something are free to do so, however. Many of them may really not even investigate it, but many many many many many (many infinity here) will check it out, buy it, play it. If the game is released, it will have more players in the first month than are on these fora, without a doubt.

But none of it is really important here, on the bastion of NWN faithful. I love this old game too, but it doesn't stop me from playing other games, or watching new developments. YMMV.

It's a good way to look at it, while I have no interest in that other game and this future other game wrongfuly stamped with the name of our good old beloved game, Im definitly quite exited about this game that is not

If you like single player fantasy adventures Bioware has been pouring such over you the last 9 years or so. Why not play DA or something and finally let us other have an RPG with multiplayer?

Who exactly is keeping you from having that now or in the future by holding onto praise for the original? That makes no sense, but I do believe the implication has a psychological term attached to it.

No one is keeping you from desiring or having the NWN:OMG, they are expressing that they will not likely make the move and/or expressing their perceptions, right or wrong, about the direction the game is moving in. This affects nothing but your sensibilities, because it certainly doesn't affect your ability to anticipate, purchace, or enjoy anything that winds up being produced by Cryptic or any other developer (mind you, Cryptic's involvement is enought to shy away anyone who is familiar with their track record).

I'm not going to weigh in on Pay 2 Play other than I would rather pay for an expansion where I know exactly what I am getting than a subscription for something undefined. Enough arguments are already made on both sides and, much like a political argument, neither side will acknowledge the realistic points that the other has.

I will say that I understand the merits of a Pay 2 Play model but that I personally dislike the idea of a monthly subscription fee for something I've bought, but that does not hinder you in any way from the opposite.

I do not mind multi-player; rather enjoy PW's. But I do mind the PK's and like reported actions, as well as some of the same seemingly entitled personalities seen on these new forums as fellow Players. And I bet many feel the same about this Ancient curmudgeon.

And I cannot afford to Pay-to-Play.

I think you will find SuperFly, that the only side you will find here, is that We, (being those that have decieded to stay with NWN after NWN2, after 7ish years of NWN) are not about to stop playing/building/creating in NWN, just because some new thing has come out with the NWN name on it. We have been there, done that, as it were, and for myself frankly, don't care to go through it all again only to find, that the new title is not the NWN that I love building/playing/creating in, and that I can not do all the great and not so great things I can do now in NWN. That does not stop you from enjoying, paying for, or whatever you wish to do with the new title, However, for me, your desire for others to jump on board, to "give it a chance with you" tells me that deep down you know that the community that is still actively making NWN what it is, is not going to jump with you. Your going to find, in life that when a person finds something that they like, they tend to stick with it, no mater how many others tell them that something else is better, or more fun. There have been a number of friends over the years who, whith great gusto have told me how much fun skydiving is, how incredable it is, and how alive they feel from the experience. I however tell them all, with the utmost respect, No thank you. I do not want to try it. Does that take from their fun experience, No. Does it stop them from doing it? No. Does it hurt their feelings? No. Why, because they are not insistant that I try it or am being negative, or afraid. they understand that I have no desire at all to do that. they respect my feeling on it enough to not nag me on it, and belittle my non-desire. That is how your posting is reading to me, that you can not be happy unless we all jump into the new title. I am not going to jump, but I will happily hold the door for you, jump, have a great time, but when you find that it is not NWN that we will still be here building, creating, and playing, come on back! We probably won't say I told you so, then again we probabaly will.

Pay-to-play is commitment to a single server and all its idiosyncrasies.  Personally, I don't like being locked into any one server which is one of the advantages of Gamespy.  You can just connect to another with a better connection, less latency, etc. Now, if a service like this (P2P) furnished several alternate servers, one could find the machine with the best ping and the most bandwidth and feel confident connectivity would never be an unresolvable  issue.

Of course, this is not a consideration unique to the NWN MMO, but still a factor nonetheless.

^ If this new NWN was not going to be Pay-To-Play, was based on an earlier edition of D&D, and offered a GTD of compatible shards and servers for like minded players with no griefing, I would be interested. I am not closed minded due to it being a new NWN product, but dislike what is being offered with this specific one.

Now back to your regular program.....

Lets not turn this into a monetary issue before we have even seen the business-model. Personally I have NO problems whatsoever with paying like 10 dollars a month if it is a good game I am spending a couple hours in almost every day. I mean you can't even buy a DVD movie for that price and thoose are usually boring.

HipMaestro...there could be several servers....

Here is my solution to get Bioware (the original team, not the hacked version it is now) to make NWN v2.0

First of all, drop D&D and go with Pathfinder.

That should take care of any and all issues involving the IP.

Then take NWN and run with it.  Blow our minds.

I get giddy just imagining it.
