Please help with playing on Vista
« on: January 20, 2011, 12:07:35 pm »

I'm trying to play NWN on my current rig and it won't load or update. I'm a tech idiot, i got a very late start into computers. I really don't know my way around my pc. I would need step by step instructions. Thanks for any help. These are my rig's specs (built with help on from the old forums):

CPU: CPU: i7 920
Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme
Graphics: eVGA Geforce 285.
Memory: OCZ Platinum 3x2 gb ddr3-1600
Hard drives: SSD Intel x25 160 gb (for os, and core games).
OS: Vista Home Premium 64.

Thanks

This topic would be better posted in the tech support subforum so if/when you do, please follow the instructions in the "Start Here" sticky to enable the community to get an accurate and complete picture of your configuration.  Be sure to include your version of the game you are trying to play/install (i.e. Gold, Platinum, Diamond, etc.), if multicore, and other pertinent stats.

You can skip the autoupdate utility provided by the game and download the critical rebuild for your version from the legacy Bioware site.

As far as the idiosyncrasies of installing with the Vista OS you may find your answers in this thread also from the legacy Bioware forum.

Some of the same issues are addressed in the instructions for Win7 installation which is available in the aforementioned Tech Forum here on social.

Cheers!

VISTA marked a point in Windows (lack of) security in that they attempted to use a LINUX style (ok it is just looks not substance but it was a step in the right direction sort of) in that there is now an ADMINISTRATOR and USERS, a two level system for 'permissions' - which allow one program to use other programs, based on who started them.

NWN was made before this scheme was implemented so it needs to be approached differently.

Right click the ICON for NWN on your desktop, select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR and see if that works. If not, post a message back here and we'll have another go at it. Chances are you are not setup to run this program as admin.

Be well. Game on.

To go even a step further than ehye kandee to get mine to work I have to do the same thing; right click nwn and run as administrator.  But after that I have to click the update button on the first menu, push the close button on the update menu, wait for the original menu to come up again, and then click play.  If I just try to click play none of the keys work and clicking the mouse just exits the game and makes it mess up

The best way to do this is to use your file explorer and right click all of the files with the extention .exe in your NWN installation directory then pick "properties" then "compatibility mode" and set each file to "run as administrator" and to "run in XP compatibility mode service pack 2 or 3" both seem to work well so I use service pack 3. That way if you decide to open the toolset or whatever they are all running correctly for your OS.

As a matter of fact any older game I install in Windows 7 I always do the above adjustments before I run the game and I have so far not found any I can not play in the new OS....hope this helps '<img'>

I've also found that by removing the intro video files from the movies folder in the directory (just the ones that play on starting the game) stopped me from getting CTD's when i tried to launch the game from nwn.exe (allowing me to access the DM client) instead of having to launch from nwnmain.exe to get it to run and shortened my load time '<img'>

The video works fine for me, but I have to bypass the launcher completely on my vista rig. NP though. I just set up separate shortcuts for the game, toolset, server, and DM client and plopped them into a directory in my games folder.

The patch has been aborted

then when i try to play it says "this progam is blocked due to compatibility issues".  then when it says to check for a solution online, there is no solution.  is there anything i can do?

Download this 1.69 HotU Critical Rebuild

Be smart, save the .exe to a folder somewhere, that you can run it again if you need to reinstall etc...

It is an executable you must manually run.  You should give the program full access rights to properly patch your game.
