Henchmen Issues with Single Player Mode?
« on: October 31, 2010, 03:46:08 am »

Hi, it's my first time posting here, and atm, i'm very frustrated. I have a copy of NWN : Platinum, and reinstalled it yesterday, feeling i'd like to take some time to go though beat it, seeing i bought it 4 yrs ago, and never once saw the end. Anyways, the issue i'm having is this. When i finish the tutorial for single player, and start assembling my group, i first hire the rogue, and then head to the tavern for my 2nd henchman, but when i add them (any of them), the rogue leaves my party.

There is no way i can play with just 1 henchman. My apoligies if this is a issue already posted about, but i'm at the end of my rope atm with this game. Anyone know what the issue with this is? My current patch # is v1.69.8109.

The issue with this is that the Official Campaign for NWN was designed for one henchman only. '<img'>
You should have gotten a message like "You may only have one henchman at a time" displayed in the chat window.

I don't like it either and it's not done very elegantly that your henchman leaves your party without another word but that's the way the OC works and the OC is already very easy with one henchman only. There may be a workaround to it, dunno, I leave that to someone else to answer.

In any case, if you get frustrated with the OC, remember NWN isn't just the OC. Try out one of the other campaigns (HotU is a lot better, IMO) or check out one of the innumerable community made modules, a lot of them are better than the OC and allow you to have more than one henchman at a time. Or go online and build a party with real companions instead of henchmen...

NWN isn't the OCs, the Official Campaigns. It's much more than that because of the community. I said a community, not a sect.

There are a few tricks to play with more than one henchy somewhere, but, anyway, my only recomendation if playing the OC would be to be extra careful when it comes to switching between hench(wo)men: Always do this through the convo, the conversation!

Don't jump from one to another, by just clicking on the next one you want, that could definitely break the game, at least in the OCs.

Remember: first fire (dialog!) your current henchy before hiring the new one.

In HotU, you'll be finally rewarded with a second henchy.

Ah, i was afraid you were gonna tell me that. Noooooooo!!!  Oh well, still love the game anyhow  '<img'>  And thx to both of you for the timely response. Now i can either push forward with my fighter/rogue combo, or restart a new setup with maybe a rogue/cleric combo, or just do like you said and play HotU  '<img'>   choices choices, lol.

If you really need more than one henchman, you could try the OHS Henchman System. But it will only offer you the possibility to use your own characters as additional henchmen, not a second henchman from the campaign.

Just my 2¢.

Greetings

If you're thinking about taking one of the spell-casting henchpeople, you should be aware that you have no control over how or when they cast spells. They cast seemingly completely randomly during combat, and make really stupid choices a lot of the time. (Hmm, let's cast Protection from Elements on somebody that already has it active anyway while this human fighter in plate wielding a greataxe chops my head off.)

Your fighter rogue combo sounds like a very strong team for the OC - the rogue will automatically detect and disarm traps for you, and will open locks on command by responding to your clicking on the locked object yourself, giving you some control and some actually useful automatic support.

The only way to have a smart spellcaster by your side is to go online.

I suppose.

The only true NWN for me. Since I never had the g... to try it...

My best PC online in Diablo was a wizard. And he gave me the most funniest moment in my so tiny multiplayer experience.

We should make a thread about "Your funniest online event"...

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but it should also be possible to play a wizard or sorcerer PC with a pixie familiar to do the rogue job for you, and then make the henchman a meatshield (e.g. fighter) or just choose it according to your sympathies and additionally let a summoned creature distract the bad guys in melee while you, the intelligent mage, cast and shoot at them from a distance.

Nobody can correct you, olivier, because you are correct.  Wiz/sorc can build a tank party of three to help in the OC with a hench, a summon, and a familiar.  The pixie has always been my fav rogue, too.   Free healing a pixie is a very handy perc.

Interesting. I never knew that a pixie familiar could do rogue functions.

I just can't play a wiz/sorc without my trusty black cat, though! (panther)

So true. I'm afraid Olivier is right again, and I know Hip, how painful he could be.
"It" is the only familiar rogue "opener & untrapper", my favorite one as well; and the best part about it, it as I, for a long time, was convinced a pixie was a she... until onioneater told me to get a closer look at "it"... is... you can actually "be" the pixie. Very useful.
Something to be remembered when playing HotU.

Ah, yes, I forgot about that one. That's even better, possessing the pixie you can disarm your traps and unlock your chests all by yourself without having to wait for the stupid henchie to grasp what you're telling it.

Wow, i may have to take the wiz/sorc into consideration now. That sounds like an amazing setup for a strong, single player party. Thanks Olivier  '<img'>

               'second that.
Grimgnaw and Sharwyn. The only reason why I would have loved having two henchies in the OC.
What a pair.
