Attempting my own build. Rouge/Ranger/Cleric
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:00:59 pm »

OK, I've had this idea for a while and I'm not sure if it works(Have not tested it yet) but I wanna know what people think of the idea.

The idea was simple, a long range sneak attacker. But then I ran into the wall most sneak attackers would run into... Crit./SA resist creatures. Since I found that only a few classes really resist them, I focused on a way to beat those types. Thus I thought to add ranger, would give some bonuses to bow and a pet eventually. Then I thought it just didn't have enough, that's when I cam across the cleric. The thin was I thought clerics only healed, I'd never messed with one so I didn't know about domains. With enough research, I found that taking the destruction and sun domains would make you more effective against golems and such.

Now the problem I'm having is stats, I dunno if I wanna dex build... I kinda wanted a Wisdom build and use Zen Archery more. Problem is a lot of the bow feats need dex too get, as well as the fact dex contributes to avoiding and such. I wanted something more wisdom based like a monk, but I can only get 3 classes and I only get 40 levels to play with. Another problem is how to divide the levels, and how would situating what to level when would get me the most bang for my buck in a sense. Still looking into this, haven't begun testing though.

If anybody has any thoughts on this go ahead and comment, I'm open to new ideas and different views.

Too many classes that all need dedicated levels to be effective. (not to mention that, with 3 base classes, you'll run into XP penalty concerns).

Rogue needs lots of levels to get high sneak attack numbers.

Ranger needs lots of levels for Favored Enemy bonuses and Bane of Enemies.

Cleric needs lots of levels for spells and non-dispellability (nice word, huh?)

Clerics are actually one of the most powerful classes in the game. Probably THE most powerful melee class. They get some awesome buff spells and can wreak havoc when fully buffed.

Something to consider is going with a Cleric/Rogue. Go heavy Cleric, with a sprinkling of Rogue to top up skills and get a bit of sneak attack as well. I'd suggest STR based instead of DEX or WIS. Grab just enough WIS to be able to cast all your spell levels. Start with something like 16 WIS and raise it to 19 (or 20 if you want to round it off for the bonus slots).

Another option is to go heavy Ranger with some Rogue sprinkled into the mix. Again, I'd go STR based. Grab crit/sneak immune creatures as your Favored Enemies and make sure you pick up Bane of Enemies as well.

If you're looking to build an archer, then the hands-down best choice is Arcane Archer. Rogue/WIZ/AA, with high DEX is a very effective character. Heavy AA, moderate Rogue levels and just one WIZ level to access the AA class. The bonus damage from your AA levels will help against sneak/crit immune types.

A 1/2 Elf FTR/Bard/AA can be a devastating killing machine as well. I played one on my favorite server and went STR-based, picking up Devastating Critical. The boost from AA levels to your AB offsets the 'loss' from low DEX and with Dev Crit on the bow and using the FTR feats to grab WS/EWS in both your melee weapons and bow, you've got yourself something that can really dish out the pain. But that's broadly straying from your sneak attacke idea.

Actually, I did a pre-epic version of this a way's back for an RP concept here if you are interested.

The main problems were the XP penalty and thin ability spread needed to make it at all effective.  There's areal good reason why you won't find any epic builds, because it is a very cumbersome idea and one which can be improved by going another direction altogether.  The aforemention pre-epic was designed for its RP value so was more or less locked into the class combo.

If you use the rog mainly for skill dumps, you will need halfling to minimize all the penalty levels.  In that case, keep the rgr/clc levels as close as you can for as long as you can.  The build uses a balance between Dex & Wis to enable at least Clc lvel 5 spells, mostly just for buffing purposes.  Of course, Zen archery is always a possibility but keep in mind that you are choosing 3 classes that are somewhat feat-strangled so don't expect a lot of diversion.

I had originally planned to use this particular build in epic, developing the cleric abilities a bit better and gaining higher FE damage (eg. Bane of Enemies), but never really explored it further (our group of halflings became involved in RL and had to disband '<img'> ). I had reconciled to the fact that the cleric aspect would never be strong enough to become a typical godly cleric but would be excellent support.  You'll need to decide ahead of time how high you want the cleric spells and set your Wis no higher than that.  IMO going Zen is going to affect all your rogue skills adversely since you can't maintain high levels in 2 abilities at once.

Let's see what ideas, if any, pop up from the rest of the community.  My original concept in the pre-epic forum was lukewarm so perhaps this will prove differently.

Innovation can have its rewards, so keep trying! '<img'>
