X-Fire helps for multiplayer in NWN
« on: September 27, 2010, 12:53:43 pm »

If you are into multiplayer and playing on persistent world servers I can really recomend this program.

X-Fire is a chat software with a serverbrowser and many other features:

- See what game and on what servers your friends are playing. Join them with one click.
- See where the friends of your friends are playing.
- Chat directly. Messages will pop up in-game. No need to ALT+TAB anymore to check your MSN.
- MSN support and others. So you can send ye' ol' Microsoft application into the grave.
- Voice chat ( 1on1 or group)
- It automizes taking screenshots and video and putting them on the webb. You can even have live streaming from your gaming session from your computer onto the website.
- Join guilds and get access to all the members in your friends list.
- List all avaliable servers.

I also started a community for NWN1 players on X-Fire. See the link in my signature.

Many new games have systems like this built into the game. Games that use Steam for example. Quite important for co-op games to work really...

I am not affiliated with X-Fire in any way. I am just a happy end user...

No offense intended but I have found that installing xfire adds some lag to client side when I log into larger PWs.

Also it seems to be more geared towards the "script kiddys" and WoW crowd which is not a bad thing just different than the NWN Crowd.

I am not trying to start an argument as this is just my humble view.

I do not feel any lag added from x-fire at least. There could be some if you measure FPS for example...but it is not noticable. I have almost never heard of this from others as well.

Bear in mind that x-fire is also meant to be used for fast paced FPS games that are much more sensetive to drops in FPS...

I don't know what you mean with "script kiddys". You really dont need to script anything. It is quite simple to use.

One thing I noticed is that there IS slightly more NWN arena type players there than overall in NWN...but I also found many good friends for roleplaying there as well...so.

You have to agree that using some kind of program for tracking friends in games is a must if you are into co-op....which NWN multiplayer is all about.

Especially at servers with dwindling amount of players it is important to know when Moe and Joe are going to play or if they are playing already so you can join them...

I'm normally on xfire, but I do prefer the layout and presentation of msn. Xfire is too...crap looking.

I've not been on it for a few weeks as I can't have it injecting into the client when I'm coding.
