How To avoid the nefarious Troll..

                The Definition of a Troll

We in the NWN community need to become aware of these immature, inconsiderate, and down right imflamatory people who, through the use of forums, blogs, and other websites, choose to make inflamatory remarks towards posters, which may or may not be aimed at the original poster (OP), or which make comments about the thread or topic to excite emotional responses from the readers or OP.

These people should be viewed for what they are, a Troll.

Their only intent, no matter how well they disguise it, is to excite people to anger or other emotions, to cause grief, and/or to make someone react in a manner that they intend them to...

An example of trolling: (note a Troll = Noun,  Trolling = Verb / which is what Trolls do)

O.P. says:  "I'd like to talk about this."

Troller says:  "I'd think your a doofus."

O.P. says:  "Hey, that was uncalled for!"

Troller says:  "Your mom was called for.."

Here you can clearly see the pattern of the Troll trying to excite anger, in this case from the O.P.

Sometimes however, the Troll can use subtlety by hiding thier intent..

Poster A: "I think we should focus on the topic at hand."

Poster B: "I agree, let's stay on topic guys.."

Troller A:  "It's not like the topic is important."  <<discrediting the validity to the topic

Troller B: "I think the O.P. has it all wrong, this is what is correct."  <<<Secretly attacking the O.P. by persuading other readers.

Trolling is not hard to do, sometimes people in a grumpy mood can shoot back something that is clearly not what they may have intended to say, therefore we should all watch our emotions, manners, show courtesy towards poster in all forums, not just the Bioware Forums, and this is why I'm posting this thread essentially.  To call for proper behavior.

Furthermore, if you respond to trolls you only excite them to continue, and this would be a mistake.

The entire point of trolling is to exite people's emotions and to illicit a response (in a negative way),  to persuade other readers that the topic / O.P. or other posters are wrong, and/or to discredit a poster. (Possibly including the O.P.)

Therefore, the best way to avoid a troll is to simply to not respond to them, but please, don't be tempted to play their game or worse, join their team, for often both sides end up losing. (The troller & those who bandwagon with them.)

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please stay on topic and no trolling, thanks..

               not NWN1 related.

When dealing with troublemakers on the internet, please use restraint, courtesy and common sense. Don't respond to them at all, and report them to a Moderator. Thank you.

End of line.
