Problems running NWN
« on: August 05, 2010, 01:04:49 pm »

I'm running NWN on my new laptop computer (windows 7) and although it's basically running correctly (I set it to compatibility mode for XP SP 3) for some reason it only takes up a small portion of the screen. The whole picture takes up 800x600 in the middle of the screen and the rest is black. I can't even put my mouse in the black section.

I don't really know why this is. I've tried changing the resolution but nothing seems to happen. Does anyone know anything I could try next?

Edit:

You should be able to manage this though the video options. Well, allright, you tried that already... ''
Now, about rewriting your "nwn.ini" file with the screen numbers (Height & Width) of your choice? And make a copy of that file, before anything foolish okay? As always.

Without knowing your video specs (card ID/driver iD) I can only make a wild guess but it may be a lack of communication between your driver and the screen.  This can be solved by adjusting via the driver specs or perhaps by upgrading at the card manufacturer site to a version which has compensated for the requirements of NWN, as is often the case for machines with a version of ATI's Catalyst installed.

My suggestion is to follow the procedure in the Self-help Tech Support forum and post your full specs.  Otherwise, it's an adventure trying to figure out what environment you are struggling to master.  Deal?

I see, thank you. I'll get all that information once I find it. Should I post a topic in the tech support forum instead? (I didn't even see it somehow).

That's the convention the new boards are trying to expedite.  Once you have reposted, you can edit this topic to point over to the new one.  In addition, to aid in future searches for others with similar issues I would re-title the Tech topic to include the keywords "laptop", "Win7" and "reduced screen size" or at least something slightly more descriptive.

Hope you get this solved quickly so you can get back to enjoying the game!

BTW, Shia has already created a sticky there for Win 7 that may help steer you in the right direction;)
