Is it worth starting playing this game?
« on: August 04, 2010, 11:47:01 am »

Ok, i found this game in some back room, am installing it as I type.

What I want to know is: Is it really worth starting to play this game?

Because it came out in what, 2002?? I gather that the online (because it's multiplayer that really interests me, single player campaigns are just movies with clicking...) is supposed to be good, but am I just gonna find a highly developed, highly skilled community with no room for newbie noobs who don't understand anything?

Is it worth it?

thanks.

               Absolutely!

I wouldn't say the majority of NWN players (there are still a lot, considering the game's age) are highly skilled, and certainly not in a way that alienates or leaves out new players. There are a lot of persistent worlds and they're always looking for new players; you'll probably find an enthusiastic and helpful welcome on most servers. It's just a matter of finding one (or more) that you like, and joining in.

The NWN Wiki is also a good resource if you want to learn more about the game.

Have fun!

               Yes it is worth it.

It depends which server/PW (Persistant World) you join as to how 'noob friendly' they are, but I know for a fact there are many that make a special effort to be as friendly as possible to new players.

My advice would be to post what type of gameplay you are looking for (heavy/medium.light in character roleplaying and what level of HnS (Hack and Slash) you'd like in a new thread in the NwN 1 Persistant Worlds & Multiplayer sub forum. Also check out the posts made by PWs there as you might find exactly what you are looking for more quickly.

If you are installing now, you might want to check this thread to make sure it will run smoothly. (If you are on an XP machine you don't need to do all those things, but you will still need to patch the game to 1.69- the link is in the thread). You may need to download some haks to play on PWs (They will mention which ones. If they don't, I would just find somewhere a bit more organised to play). These add extra content and are often worth it imho, but they are not necessary. Some very good servers use only the standard resources.

I'd also suggest not dismissing the single player games for the reason you gave. Many have very different stories depending on the path you choose through the module. For example, Resurrection Gone Wronger has, iirc, over 100 different possible endings depending on the choices you make.

Have fun

Yes, it's absolutely worth it.  Whether you want to jump straight into a Persistent World or play some Single Player modules first, this game has a huge amount to offer.  I'd suggest checking out the Module List at NWN Vault for a good place to start out.

Just wondering, by the way, whether you've acquired vanilla NWN or NWN with one or more expansions?  (I do sometimes see vanilla NWN in some bargain bins.)  Quite a few PWs and modules require both expansions to play, so just be aware of that.  :-)

For all of the reasons given above and a thousand others we can't think of off the top of our heads, unequivocally the answer is a resounding YES!

               Absolutely!

Some servers even have lots of new content on them which actually looks better than the original. Even if the server doesn't have a lot of new content it can still be good.

Don't worry about not being able to play online because of elitism. This is only a problem on some of the most (read: a few) populated servers.

You can skip single player altogether yes. At least thats what I did. Never touched the original campaign but I have been playing on online servers for 7-8 years now and I also admin on one of the servers. Just give the PDF manuals a quick glance and then jump on a server.

I am always stressing some means of communcating here. If I might pull a shameless plug it would be good if you got X-Fire and joined my NWN1 community there. That is an easy way to communicate. Other ways are MSN and Skype. If you got any of thoose I could even give a tour of our server myself.

Send me a PM with your contact information in that case.

All the links you need are in my signature.

Welcome to (still) the best online RPG! Forget about WoW...this is the real deal...

Are you an addict? As this game i so addicting that you can log into about 100 different worlds and see 100 different imaginations put together in ways that confound and confuse while entertaining.

It is well worth the effort.

NWN is definitely worth playing.  If you don't like the original campaign, there are many single player modules and PWs out there to suit any gamers needs.  Most of them have excellent stories that are original and thoughtful.  Granted the graphics are old school, but the stories and members of the community are second to none. Buy it, NWN costs few coins (another advantage over new games where you are still paying) . You wont be able to play multiplayer without original cdkeys.

Indeed.  You can get a new copy of the first expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, for as little as $2.99 plus shipping, and a new copy of Hordes of the Underdark for as little as $1.22 plus shipping.  (You need to scroll down past the featured merchants to get to the really good prices.)  Of course, you can get used copies for even less, but your chances of getting an unused CD key would be fairly slim (and, as Shadow points out, you need an original CD key for multiplayer.)

NWN isn't A game, it's like a dozen different games with similar rules with new games popping up every once in a while. Most of the player made stuff isn't exactly professional quality but the variety and innovation has always been entertaining. Hack and slash Diablo style, MMO-type persistent worlds, mindless killing arenas, survival scenarios, and.... umm... there's always Kinky Kingdoms or whatever it's called.

Ok, let's just forget that last one. Point is, there's a ton of different ways to play it that people have come up with and are still developing.

I just started to play this as well.

This might be a dumb question, but I can't seem to find the Post New Topic button.  I would like some help, so like usual I turn to the forums.  I can reply in a topic, but can not seem to Post a New Topic, at least not in NWN1

At the top left of each forum page just to the right of your profile pic with a green dot next to the "Post New Topic" radio button... at least on this browser, it's there.

Cheers, mate!
