Yes it is worth it.
It depends which server/PW (Persistant World) you join as to how 'noob friendly' they are, but I know for a fact there are many that make a special effort to be as friendly as possible to new players.
My advice would be to post what type of gameplay you are looking for (heavy/medium.light in character roleplaying and what level of HnS (Hack and Slash) you'd like in a new thread in the
NwN 1 Persistant Worlds & Multiplayer sub forum. Also check out the posts made by PWs there as you might find exactly what you are looking for more quickly.
If you are installing now, you might want to check this
thread to make sure it will run smoothly. (If you are on an XP machine you don't need to do all those things, but you will still need to patch the game to 1.69- the link is in the thread). You may need to download some haks to play on PWs (They will mention which ones. If they don't, I would just find somewhere a bit more organised to play). These add extra content and are often worth it imho, but they are not necessary. Some very good servers use only the standard resources.
I'd also suggest not dismissing the single player games for the reason you gave. Many have very different stories depending on the path you choose through the module. For example,
Resurrection Gone Wronger has, iirc, over 100 different possible endings depending on the choices you make.
Have fun
